Coming home from work this PM, and the car just died on the highway. Tooling along, and notice no power and the dash idiot lights (oil, brake, service engine soon lights) are on. Coasted to the side of the road. Car cranks strong, but does not start. Quick check of accessory belt (thinking alternator) and oil (level is fine) indicates nothing wrong there. I’ve pulled the negative terminal and will let it set for 20 minutes.

Note, car is 2003 with 72,000 miles, bone stock. Full 60,000 mile service (timing belt, waterpump, accessory drive belt, coolant and plugs) done in October of 2010. I have never had even the slightest mechanical problem with the car.

Any other thoughts are greatly appreciated.

On your fuel return line there is a squeeze clamp. Pull it off. Put a bottle on the end of the metal line to catch fuel. Turn on ignition. If nothing comes out your filter or pump are shot. Or both.

 

Also by your left knee while seated there is a fuse box. Two fuses show an engine symbol. Check those. Make sure to really inspect them. Mine blew and for three days i couldnt figure it out. Really couldnt see the break in the filament.

 

Same situation with me one time and a fuel injector was stuck open, check the engine cap and smell if it stinks like gasoline it's prolly a stuck open injector, if not it's probably you're fuel pump or it's relays..

 

This happen to me awhile back, for me it was the return fuel line from what my mechanic said.

 

Thanks all for the advice. I lent my reader to a guy at work, but will be getting it back today. I think eiher the pump or a fuse as you've all suggested, I'll try the above when I get home from work tonight.

 

Code is P0335 - Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction. Also noticed fuel pump does not turn on to pressurize fuel system when key turned forward. I think that is also indicative of the sensor circuit failure.

Looks like a new sensor is about $80 on MitsuParts. Anyone know how easy these are to change?

Is this something a local non-Mitsu mechanic could do easily, and any thoughts on the standard number of labor hours. Suppose I'll need it towed, too.

 

gotta take timing belt off to do it. not for the novice. behind balance shaft belt sprocket. maybe u can blame it on the 60k service, wink wink
