Custom turbo manifold/ stock turbo

Hey guys, as a former Corvette enthusiast/ builder ive decided to take the trip to the dark side and am about to take delivery of an evo ix... as a new member id like to say hi to all of you! This looks like a great forum! I'm a fairly seasoned fabricator. Ive fabbed parts for cars that have won the Ridler award, set land speed records, and ran autocross events(johnsons hot rod shop - check em out), so you get the picture. I tell you that because i will be making a turbo manifold for the stock turbo very soon. I understand airflow dynamics, fabrication procedures, etc... just thought id ask you guys about the design. Anything to know specifically beforehand? Any pics of some you could post? Any and all input is appreciated. Thanks! -Blake

welcome!

My personal favourite is the Shearer manifold which is no longer sold:

The ETS version (small runner i think)

Toxic fab

There are MANY stock manifold replacements for the Evo.
Are they worth it? Maybe if you're squeezing every last bit out of power out of them.
Any of these manifolds will push your power/torque curve to the right, so think about spool and response when you make one.

Personally i would do the intake manifold and intercooler and piping before the exhaust manifold!

Cheers, Mike

Thank you Mike! Nice detailed images... the evo im buying does have all the I/C piping replaced already, and i had planned to have the intake manifold done as well. Good observations and i appreciate the input. Havent necessarily decided which I/C to go with yet, but is on my build list. I'm not building a super high HP car, i just enjoy making my own parts and the stock manifold looks terrible IMO. I definitely like Shearer's design, looks sick. I'm thinking I'll probably build something with shorter runners and try to make equal lengths for the twin scrolls(equal lengths per scroll...) Dont know how possible that is, or how practical really. Just an idea. And although very time consuming I'd like to do one completely of pie cut sections because I havent seen any on an Evo yet. Its still in the planning stages so we'll see how it goes. Thanks again!, -Blake

With the intercooler, remember that the thicker you go, the less pressure drop you will have across the core meaning it will make more power (more paths, lower resistance).

With the Exhaust manifold, you can buy an Evo 4/5/6 radiator to move the top pipe to the side, this should give you a little more room for some "crazy" runners

Nice! I didn't know that about the radiator! Thanks for the heads up!

Your biggest issue is keeping the cost down. Plenty of well known, expensive, bada$$ looking manifolds. I think if you build a good looking manifold and keep the cost down, then you might have a winner. I would certainly buy one.

Alot of people want that custom fabbed look but can't spend a G note to get it..
I am one of them..

For my personal car the cost wouldn't be an issue bc I wouldn't have to worry with selling it. With my resources and talents I'm positive I can make a sick moderately priced manifold. Once you see mine id be glad to build them for others. Hadn't even considered selling them! Still haven't seen any design that I'm really crazy about.. so ill make one I do like!

How about a top mount exhaust manifold setup for the oem frame turbo?

Also, ToxicFab makes some really nice stuff as well. I really like his forward facing exhaust manifold for the oem turbo platform but its out of my budget range.

Look at Johnsonshotrodshop.com and u can see some of my metal work. Particularly on the gforce cider, the Cadillac xlr, the black.and blue 32's and some of the camaros. Btw I work at a shop where I can operate a plasma and a laser so I can make my own flanges and stuff for free out of heat treated material....
