The Big Bang????

In the Evos in general....

When the timing belt snaps, does the whole engine go too? Meaning when the belt snaps, do the valves have any clearance from the pistons or not? If no, then you'd have a big problem with blown up motors...

Thx,
Erik

yes, with 4G63 engines, timing belt snaps, your motor goes with it.

That's the case with most engines just for references. Timing chains have problems also. We've had cars that this has happened to that only destroyed the head.

There are lots of non-interference engines out there. But I believe the Evo engine is of an interference design. So when the belt snaps, you could have some crushed valves and damage to other spinning parts.

dang... that is a huge problem... My family was considering buying the Evo, but just that right there might've been the big red STOP sign...

The change from chains to belts was a huge techinal innovation.

And why would this stop you from buying an EVO? If you don't change you belt, it breaks. Kinda like, if you don't fill your oil, it siezes. Such is the way of life.

It doesn't make that much of a difference from stock...the timing belt just turns the cams...it is not in the actual drivetrain.

Not that it makes a big difference anyway but it's the torque that will affect the belt. That and the additional RPMs if you've bumped that up.

Most cars, if the timing belt breaks, you will at the very least bend the valves. The EVO has a 5 year powertrain warrantee. The timing belt is one of the last things you should worry about in any car.

Just get it replaced around the 50,000 mi mark or whatever the manufacturers suggested time period is.

These new belts are a lot better than the ones in the 1G cars. The belt interval is 105,000 miles or something crazy like that.

Mate, with any modified engine with a belt, you need to check the belt regularly. I would say check the thing at EVERY service interval (around 5000 miles) that way if there is any signs of premature wear, you can hopefully get it resolved before the BIG BANG!
