New Member Evo 9 Slipping clutch

Hi all,

I've just registered and look forward to being part of your community.

Last week I purchased my first Mitsubishi Evo. Its an Evo 9 FQ340.

I purchased the car from a dealer, however the evening after taking delivery I noticed that the clutch is slipping very noticeably in the higher gears (something, that wasn't obvious in the test drive prior to purchase).

Under full throttle acceleration the revs rise without a perceptable increase in road speed. Eventually some traction is gained, but overtakes feel like Russian Roulette!

I don't doubt that the dealer will sort this under warranty. My only concern is that the dealer might have his technicians attempt to save the cost of replacing the clutch (not to mention the 6 hours of labour!) by adjusting it, when really it should be replaced.

My question is, can Evo 9 clutches be adjusted so as to 'buy' a little extra time. Or....when a clutch starts slipping, is it really time for a new one?

I gather that hydrolic clutches cannot be adjusted. I don't suppose anyone knows if the Evo 9's clutch is this type.

Thanks in advance.......

You need a clutch. Adjust wouldn't do anything for the slipping.

They really should take care of that for you. Didn't they give you any sort of warranty?

Yes, they gave me a years warranty on technical/electrical failures, with the first month covering anything at all that might go wrong. Therefore the clutch slipping on the evening of the day of purchase was covered.

However with a clutch being a 'wearable' part, almost like brake pads, my concern was that the technician might avoid the cost of replacing the clutch and only carry out work to adjust it so as to buy perhaps a couple of months use.

If the clutch was to inevitably begin slipping again a few months down the line, my fear is that I would be picking up the bill for a clutch replacement plus installation; Simply because clutches are seen as 'wearable' and therefore not covered after the first month.

As it happens, I took the technician for a spin and demonstrated the level of slippage. He took a look at the car and concluded that a new clutch is necessary. Everything has been agreed, the part ordered and hopefully it will be installed next week. So full marks to the dealer at the moment.....

Thanks folks, I'll let you know how it drives when the clutch has been replaced.

In the meantime, I'll look forward to having a good look through this site. It looks like the definitive online source for Evo related information.......

The Saga continues:

Last Monday I dropped the car in after I had a call from the garage to say that the clutch had arrived.

On the Tuesday they rang me to say that they weren't happy with the state of the old flywheel and that they had placed an order for a new one (personally I always thought the clutch and flywheel should always be replaced at the same time on Evos!).

Today I rang the garage asking if I could collect the car, and they confirmed that everything had been installed and the car was ready for collection.

On collection, the technicians recommended 500 easy miles, no high revs and no full throttle acceleration.

After only 4 miles of driving (like a grandad!) I changed from second to third but third gear wouldn't engage, I just felt a rubbery vibration. All the other gears still engaged though.

I pulled in, put the gearbox into neutral with a view to trying to engage all gears, however only third could now be selected. When I pulled onto the road, from a third gear start I attempted to shift into fourth at about 35MPH, but the gearbox wouldn't go into neutral but just made a harsh metallic scraping sound.

I immediately selected third again and drove back to the garage using only third gear, where I have left the car overnight.

Does this sound like a gearbox linkage.....or something more sinister?

Can't believe my bad luck!!!

My friend with an Evo III here in the Cayman Islands had a similar problem after a clutch install, his LICP was not installed properly and was resting against the linkage causing it not to shift. I really hope something similar is happening for you. Look on the bright side, at least it's the dealer covering it! I know you must be frustrated though.

Good to hear from you.

I suppose the lower intercooler pipe wouldn't be the first thing to jump to mind. I'll mention this to the technician when he calls.

Its true, I'm glad I'm not picking up the bill. But I do need to be confident that the garage team are competent to work with as complicated a car as an Evo is. Yesterday didn't help my confidence.

I hope a new gearbox isn't needed, it'd be weeks before I get the car back if that were the case.

Had a call from the technician. It turns out the synchro has gone in the gearbox. What are the chances?! I worry that this car has had a very difficult life.

Either way, at least a week's wait........

And yet more woe:

The car has been in the garage for the last 8 days having the synchro replaced and bedded in and I was due to collect the car this evening!

However, today I got a call from the technician saying that when everything was put back together and tested he just wasn't 'happy' with the shift from second to third and third to fourth. That it felt 'slack' and didn't feel like the car would stay in either gear!

So they've ordered new hubs and it'll be another two weeks before I collect the car.......

I've always been aware that the 6 speed box is weaker than the 5 speed. But this is shocking.

Well everything got bedded in and I took delivery of the car a couple weeks ago with instruction to run the clutch in gently for 500 miles.

Well, I finally got to 500 miles and shock/horror.......the gearbox and clutch seem fine. HOWEVER, I'm getting no sound from my dump valve and if anything the car seems a little down on power. I had my wife rev the car whilst I had a look at the dump valve and definitely no movement inside the trumpet.

I've got a Turbosmart dump valve. Has anyone had problems with these seizing? I suppose its not had much action in the running in phase!
