Exclamation Racing Pulleys

Wanted to see if anybody out there has installed a racing pulley set, such as the set offered by Unorthodox Racing set.

Have you seen any increase in hp? Does it really feel any different?

Which set do you recommend?

Thanks in advance...

Chris

pulley set does increase your accleration less mass rotating but if you do get pulleys make sure its done right because of electrical reasons also if you have a system in your car then dont get it, its not recommended

Thumbs up They work really nice!

...The SS Pulley set from Unorthodox (for instance), it's a nice, purely-mechanical alternative for further efficiency and torque increase, particularly in the 4000-6500 rpm range.

I have been using them for *years* (3 and counting on my EVO), specifically on the 4G63 naturally aspirated and now turbo.

These are the *facts* about these pulleys on the 4G63:

1. Idle quality *improves*.

2. Power delivery further *improves* (it is smoother).

3. Torque delivery is *increased*, and it clearly feels so even on
pre-boost RPM ranges...

4. Much, much less weight (350% less) than stock pulley. No wonder why the stockers need a dampening rubber ring (poorly designed) to absorb vibrations transmitted from the crankshaft and driving-belt, which are further amplified by the stock pulley's weight and diameter. However, with such a lightweight and smaller pulley, even the driving-belt helps as a convenient dampening agent, specially in cases of serpetine belts like the EVO (as simple and as foolish as it may sound). So the rules of the game simply change, here, thanks to the massive reduction of weight (which yields into an even more massive reduction of rotational mass/inertia) and the decrease in pulley diameter.

5. Because of the benefits described above, there is *less* stress and less load on the crank and bearings, because the engine deals with a substantially lighter pulley. That is another reason why the engine itself, in idle or spinning under throttle, feels smoother and more responsive.

Power gains, more than peak, are distributed accross the power-band range that benefits (you may gain 12-14 horses of non-peak power on the Evo, with Unorthodox Racing).

I have both the SS pulley set for the EVO and the lightweight adjustable Camshaft Sprockets. Highly recommended, based on my multi-year experience and every-day use.

Happy racing!

How much were all the pullys? I had their pullys on my 95 GSR and it helped a lot

Silver Surfer had a dynosheet showing significant gains (10-15 hp?) and SOTP improvement from an underdrive pulley. There was a long thread with lots of debate as to whether they were safe due to harmonic balancers and whatnot.

Members also posted that the accessory pulleys were "safer" but may not give much of a gain? Let me see if I can find the thread...

There have been a few dyno sheets showing noticeable gains floating around. Pulleys made a noticeable difference on my Z28.

Every car I've ever owned, there have been people complaining that pulleys could wear down bearings and ultimately trash an engine but I've never seen any physical evidence other than "my cousin's roommate's friend blew his x's engine with them."

I'd be interested to see if anyone has had any evidence that they will for the Evo.

...They are kind-of-expensive. Nevertheless, If I remember correctly, got the complete Unorthodox SS Set for $350, and the Adjustable Cam Gears for $350. Both were subject to a one-time 10% or 15% discount, already reflected in the price.

Happy racing!

we got em in stock if you are interested and we offer it complete with the belts

IIRC the dyno sheet on our site is Silver Sirfers - he had the first set in the country to be dynoed, so UR used it as part of their marketing materials.

no it is fact.... ask any of the big tuners and they will verify it..... the evo will mess up if you don't put a harmonic balanced pully in

Yet we haven't heard one example of a worn crank bearing or broken motor as a result of pulleys.
