Homemade oil cooler

i just ordered all the fittings and a high grade cooler and spent about $200.i was having trouble finding the M18x1.5 to -8an fitting at Summit and the guy(Ivan) on the phone was extremely helpful.i went with a B+M cooler that is a big upgrade cooler wise as far as the online cooler kits.it actually cools almost as well as the Setrab,Derale or Fluidyne in similar sizes, but they have all of those as well.the cost will go from $200 and change to $300 and change for the other coolers.

the B+M cooler i ended up getting was just a little bigger than the online kit versions, but it's the super cooler version and much more efficient.if anyone wants part numbers, just PM me and i'll give you the list.

i'm also sure there are cheaper places to get fittings, but that particular site i went to had great pictures and then the guy on the phone went over everything to make sure i had it all right.

this was for an EVO 8 and the stock cooler actually has -6 an lines, but huge M18x1.5 banjo bolts.all you need are the M18x1.5 fitting adapters and then some 90* hose ends and some hose, lube and crush washers.

i figure most of the online kits require a little fabrication anyway,so i might as well diy and get a really good cooler for a cheap price.

Nice DIY.

I need to put a kit together here soon also. My Factory cooler got pierced and had to bypass it for now.

May just go with STM's DIY set up

PM me for info.the cooler i got is a BM like the above mentioned kit,but is far superior and only slightly larger.the fittings are a different size, but you have to buy all new fittings anyway.

the BM super cooler i got was 50% more efficient.along the lines of the Setrab in the other kits.you can also buy the setrab 25 row that is re-nadged under a company called derale.exact same cooler as in the $500 kits.it cost about double the BM though.

i looked at the kits and you are going to have to fabricate anyway,so i figured i'll do it all on my own.

i actually think oil cooler isn't mandatory on the EVO 8,going by the temps on my car,but like they say,an ounce or prevention...

i also thought about getting one of the really small Fluidynes, that work probably work better than OEM at half the size of OEM.you could put it anywhere.they literally have 100's of coolers at Summit to choose from.

i think the Setrab is good and the BM's super coolers are almost as good as the Setrabs and the Fluidyne's are the best from what i read.

good link above.

surprised this showed up 2 days after i ordered, nice.

also i was wrong about the cooler being 50% more efficient.it is only 35% more efficient and 2.25" taller.the width and thickness are the same.

Parts needed-

(4) 90 degree -8 hose ends
~5 feet of -8 hose (your choice just make sure you get hose ends that work with it)
(2)-8 to 18MMx1.5MM fittings for the oil filter housing w/gaskets
(1)oil cooler of your choice and correct fittings to adapt it to -8 (in the case of the BM it's 1/2NPT to -8).

I don't have the BM part number handy but it was easy to figure out. All STM does is throw this stuff in a box, mark up the price and call it the 'DIY kit'.

couldn't have said it better myself, and you have the option of upgrading the cooler to the $500-$600 kits.

PM me for part numbers
