timing belt tension

is it possible to adjust the tesnion on the belt without removing the crank pulley and many other things? I have changed my cam gears, and everything is lined up correctly, I just need to add tension to the belt. Can i add tesnion, or should i just order a new timing belt, accessory belt/pulleys and start over, changing everything out?

When a new belt is installed the plunger protrusion of the hydraulic tensioner is adjusted by way of the off-center central part of the tensioner pulley. The adjustment is very exact. The pin a new tensioner comes with is inserted and should be loose in the housing and in the plunger of the tensioner when the adjustment is correct.

To do this you need the pin for the tensioner or something similar, the special tool for turning the center of the tensioner pulley and, since the belt likes to jump time while doing this, a special tool for holding the cam sprockets in place.

Once the tensioner is adjusted, it provides the tension for the belt. The belt is not adjusted like an accesssory drive belt on an older car.

To gain access, remove the timing cover.

The big thing to note is that you need to be setting the tension fully with the eccentric pulley. The hydraulic tensioner's job is NOT to adequately tension the belt but instead to account for stretch over time.

You need to rotate the eccentric pulley to full tension before releasing the tensioner, then once you pull the pin, you should be able to slide it back into the tensioner without issue, if not, you didn't set the belt tight enough to begin with.
