Grinding in 5th?

Hey guys so I have some mild grinding when shifting into 5th. If I shift slowly and let go of the gas so the rpms go down it shifts smooth. But if I'm going at constant speed and want to shift it grinds? Do I have to rebuild the tranny or is there another solution?

Please help!

Damn I had already done a tranny flush when I switched out my clutch... It might have been to late for the redline to fix the syncro wear

Mine started doing this at redline on the straights at VIR last month. No problem at normal speeds. I have 74,000 miles on it, about 3,000 on track.

I hope it will last another two day session in November at least, and then I'll look to rebuild it.

It's costing me at least a second per lap.

Yeah I guess I'll just have to wait til it gets worse, I mean it bugs but it isn't unbearable and it wouldn't be worth getting my tranny rebuilt yet. Anyone know how much it would cost to rebuild the tranny, I assume not too cheap? Couple thousand?

Have you tried adjusting your clutch pedal?

A dragging clutch can cause grinds, usually in the lower gears but it's still worth a try.

After making about 8 passes at the drag strip I get a grind on aggressive 5th gear shifts too. It bothers me so much I think I'm having my trans rebuilt. I'm running Amsoil severe gear.

It started happeneing to me at the end of last year. Then this past winter I had my clutch replaced and while he was in there I had him swap out the 5th gear syncro. Been good ever since.

I doubt a fluid chage will solve your issue, but you never know.

I should have thought about changing the synchro when I replaced my clutch, would have been a smart mover.. But totally passed my mind. Yeah so far I've tried everything and it's still there, best next thing would be rebuild the tranny.

Mine is on its second rebuild. First rebuild by TRE was great until I did a 1-2-3 pull with a slipping clutch... Broke 2 teeth off 3rd gear, thus the 2nd rebuild.

New trans started grinding 5th after about 10k miles. Called John at TRE and he said it's prone to happen, even though I went 30k miles before hand.. Either way, it never got worse, I just shift slow(normal) and there's no grinding, and since I don't race the car, it's not bothering me. Next clutch upgrade I'll leave it as well, just not worth here cost right now since I never "needed" a fast shift in 5th gear, nor would I use 5th for drag racing.

Having a 5th gear grind is completely normal in an Evo VIII or IX above 50k miles... its actually quite commonplace and, though sometimes putting a good fluid like Redline MT-90 and Lightweight Shockproof, unfortunately the only REAL solution is to have that 5th gear synchro replaced. Again its conveinance for most people being that barely anyone uses it for drag and fast shifts on the highway to 5th arn't usually huge unless your a timeattack/circuit guy.

*I HIGHLY recommend Mat Himmler owner of PRECISION PSI, LLC in Glen Burnie, MD to anyone looking for a Tranny Rebuild, esp. just a stock rebuild. He has NEVER built an Evo or DSM that has ever had issues after that... does great work and charges only $750 for ALL synchros & springs replaced. His signature move is to paint your tranny case when he's done if you want it. Its included and he clears it like 3 times.... super clean look.
