Ok guys i need your help, car started acting like a beezy a few days ago and i cant seem to figure it out.
To start from the beginning a few months ago i started getting a check engine light p0304 cylinder 4 misfire, on the freeway at cruising speed the car would start sputtering like it was misfiring, when i took my foot off the gas it would stop and start again 3 seconds later, wouldnt do it at wot tho. It would continue to do this for 15 to 20 minutes then stop. I neglected it because i was too busy.
So now a few days ago the car started to change its ways, the car starts but has a sporadic idle ranges from 900 rpms to almost dieing and some times it does die like in the video to follow, but if i give it gas it will act for the most part normal. Some times it gives me issues when starting unless i give it some gas to get it going. Also the exhaust smells like unburnt fuel.
I checked for spark on all cylinders, that was ok. Checked plugs, they had normal healthy wear.
Did find some cracking on my lower injector seals tho witch im replacing today but i dont think that thats whats causing my problem.
I could really use some input on this to help me narrow this down.
Heres a link to a video i posted on youtube, in the video you can hear the idle jumping around and about when i get out of the car it almost dies then does die on its own when i get around to the front of the car.

No that noise is when the car is literally about to die like at 100 rpms.

Have you checked around the engine bay for any loose vacuum lines? Reach under and behind the intake and see if you find any loose vacuum lines.
What are your mods? Bigger injectors? Are you tuned?
Doesn't sound good that's for sure!

Cars stock for the most part at least nothing that would affect the engine.
Haven't done a boost leak test but the car doesn't drive like a boost leak, meaning while under acceleration it pulls like normal.

I do not know anyone who has another evo for swapping parts, and coils aren't something I'm ok buying if it's not the problem lol.
*update*
Just did a boost leak test at 20 psi all is well except slight leaking from the oil cap.

Do you have an AF sensor installed? I know you said it smells like unburnt fuel in the exhaust, but it might be more helpfull to know a numeric value as to "how" rich at idle it is running. Does the idle surge at all? Still have to agree with a possible vacuum leak. Typically when the mixture gets richened up enough to cause the motor to choke out, its because un-metered air is coming into the engine.
No af gauge installed, just did a boost leak test and it held really good no leeks other then the oil cap slightly. The idle will go up and down and then die. Other times it'll hang out around 500 rpms and every once in awhile the car won't start unless I tap the gas pedal and I have to keep my foot on the pedal for it to run.
Now even with all of this going on if I put the car in gear and drive it it will drive normal, build up boost like normal. But will die when I come to a stop or the rpms get low enough.
I've checked resistance on coils, wires, and IAC all was good. I'm running out of things to do.

I would seriously lean towards a faulty mass airflow meter or bad idle air control valve. Possibly both. The MAF mis-reading can cause the engine to choke itself with too much fuel, but the idle surge is more indicative of a bad IAC. You can try to clean both of them, clean the TB, disconnect the battery to clear ECM learned idle behavior, then reset the idle. Let it warm up to operating temp (fans cycle twice), and idle with no loads for 10 to 15 mins. See if that helps.
I checked the resistance on the IAC yesterday and it read good, I do however plan to clean both MAF and IAC/throttle body today. I did notice a lot of blow by in the intake tube due to my lack of a catch can so hopefully that helps.

How the hell are you doing a boost leak test that you're pressurizing the crankcase?Originally Posted by adamgetem

If you're doing it RIGHT and pressurizing the crankcase, your turbo or valve stem seals are bad.
