diff and transfer case preloads

hey guys its been a while since i have done this, i have just pulled my evo 4 rs diff and transfer box apart to shotpeen the gears, last time i rebult it many years ago we used a fish scale to set the preload, but i dont have the info any more.
from what i remember we wrapped a piece of string around the shaft and used the fish scale to measure the preload, is this how every one else does it? if so does anyone have the required measurements and where do you take it from, ie if on the transfer box you took it from the pinion as opposed to the nut at the other end it would be different because they are diferent diameters etc.
if anyone else has an easier method i am all ears
