transmission swap problems
transmission swap problems
What is the name of that shaft that connects the driver side axle and runs through the transmission and through the transfercase? Output shaft? I would also love a part number. I did some searching and it doesn't seem to help, I only come up with the output shaft inside the transmission with the gears.
When doing my 5 speed transmission swap, i went to put this shaft back in and it did not go all the way in and then it wouldn't come out. I finally had to drop the transfer case to get it out. It was then that I noticed one of the little clip rings fell off. Are those clip rings mitsubishi part number specific? Should I replace it? Also is there a certain orientation that shaft needs to be in order to get it completely through the tranny and t-case?

I worked on an EVO 8. The problem the guy had was he pounded the axle in, what ended up happening was that output shaft then got stuck inside the axle, which I guess from what people have said has happened. I just kept re-adjusting the axle and output shaft until it slid in, Take your time, because it is expensive to fix items of this nature.
It seemed I was continually pulling axles on my DSM for some reason or another. In doing that I learned that something happens to the circle clips - somehow they expand and this makes it difficult to reinsert the removed part.
One of the things I did was replace all the axle boots. The boot kits came with extra circle clips, several per box (more than you need) which I used and was careful when installing them not to do any bending. That was the solution.
If you have a circle clip missing it has really expanded. By the way, where is that circle clip now?

Got a part number for them?
Also, should I be worried about the splines on that shaft if they have some "not so smooth areas"?

The clip part number is MB526340.
The part number for the left side (driver side) is MR953315.
How do I know? I damaged the right side (pass. side) of mine and had to buy a set from a junker. Was $40 shipped for both side but I only needed one.
If it's the left (driver) side that's damaged on yours, I can sell you the other shaft. Just send me PM. I won't rip you off on it and give you a good deal because all it's really doing is sitting under the table, in a box, for the past 2 years.
If damage of the shaft looks like this, then no, it's not really usable. I tried to slide the axle in after this damage but it just wasn't going in.

Just to double check, I'm selling the longer shaft, which should be the driver side if I remembered correctly.
drivers side is the longer shaft, im looking to replace mine cause its all beat up where it goes into the Final drive, like the final drive was spinning at a different rate then the Shaft? so now the seal leaks cause it dont hold it center properly. Also them C-clips are a ****ing ***** to put on!
When installing the Shaft the Easy way is to have the opening in the C-clip facing down so it goes in easily and compresses easier.

Thank Pyro, I will let you know once i get some feedback after this post.
Here are some pictures of my shaft (lol, that sounds dirty). First picture is the tranny side of the shaft and second picture is transfer case side. I will clean it up some with a triangle file, but I am kind of scared to re-use it. What do you guys think?
