Need to replace Front passenger CV axle

What is my best option? Mitsubishi wants $600 for an axle

Has anyone used an axle from a local parts store such as Autozone or napa? Autozone sells a re manufactured axle for $75! Does this mean re manufactured OEM? Any input is appreciated

Honestly. See if you can find a used OEM one. I put a cheaper axle from advanced auto and the axle itself was too short I didn't notice at first. It hyper extended the cv boots and they ripped within 2 weeks and since they were too short they did not seat with the transfer case seal, leaked out all my tcase fluid and boom bye bye tcase. Had to get the tcase rebuilt and oem axles. Not a single issue ever since.

Edit: Check this it out man. https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sa...ive-shaft.html

Don't do it...trust me. I don't think you need to ask how I know. Used OEM is the only way. Look on the forum or try large vendors. I got some used front oem from AWD motorsports a few years back. I think it was about $175 shipped for each. You'll want to replace as a pair too

This. I also have seen first hand the damage from autozone cv axles. I have seen them commonly be the wrong size or bad fitment. get oem or DSS level 0.

you really don't have to imo. The other one might be fine for a while, but for the price of them I would replace them as they go out, unless you are itching to spend money.

I just ended up rebuilding my two front ones because of a torn inner boot on one. I rebuilt both because my motor is out of the car right at the moment, so I figured I might as well replace both. I took off the old boots, clamps, cleaned out all the peanut butter grease etc etc... and put them back together.

It was one of the easiest things I have done thus far, and I bought the axle replacement boots from rock auto. I was very very impressed with the quality of the kit as it even came with the little "rings" that pop onto the output shaft of the t-case and transmission. Extremely easy, highly recommended. In fact, recommended enough and easy enough that if anyone has to pull the axles out of the t-case/trans for any reason, I would rebuild them just to get that *peanut butter* grease out of the CV joints and replace with the higher quality grease that came with the kit. If i recall correctly, it was only about $50 to re-build both front axles.

Is the splined axle shaft itself damaged, or the CV joint? Can you post a pic of the carnage?

I had ripped the inner boot a couple months ago during my bilstein/swift install, now that all the grease is out and dirt and water have gotten in there it's clicking and banging on right turns

Also, thank you all for your responses I definitely won't be going with the autozone axles, glad I asked.

I think mine is going out, i'm getting a fluttering noise while driving from other the car, like as if a hummingbird is flying down there, i also get a vibration and noise when turning right at a certain minimum speed, gets worse as you go faster, thinking it's an axle or my wheel bearing..

Yeah, if the dust boots rip then the graphite grease escapes and water and dust damage the bearing races of the CV joint. The axle itself should be good. I don't know if you can get a used CV joint from a junk yard. The boot, the clamps, and the grease are available in kit form online.

The same thing happened to a CV joint on my MB G500. I happened to have some CV joints from an Audi S4 basket case in the garage and it was the same piece as the MB CV joint. It turns out that Porshe and VW all use the same piece as well. Sorry for the OT digression. Good luck!

In hindsight I'll retract that recommendation. I suppose if you were getting new ones you might want to get a pair. I guess it doesn't make sense to replace a working axle with a used one, making your original axle...a used axle lol. Call up AWD for a good deal.

I like YogSaahoth's tip about the used axle from AWD, for $175. You could just use the CV joint off the used axle that you purchase. They are so easy to dissasemble by removing one c-clip.
