EF3 + Stock Ex. Manifold - To port, or not to port?

I have a spare stock exhaust manifold and I recently bought a new EF3 turbo. I'm not planning to install them for another 1-2 months, so I have time to have them ported. I'm wondering whether it's worth it or not to port the manifold and turbine housing? I would like to think it'll help the turbo spool a little quicker?

Sure, why not port the manifold and the housing? Are you thinking of sending them out and having them professionally ported, or are you a DIY guy? Additionally, you might want to consider a high-tech coating for those two parts, while you are at it.

You may want to give Grimmspeed's porting and coating service a try. Call them at: 612-379-0000

Get them ported or use them as a core for porting services, but either way you can't go wrong.

If you're already swapping out the stock snail, why hold it back with the mildly restrictive OEM piece?

I got a quote from a local Pittsburgh guy who has been in the DSM/Evo scene for a while. He quoted me $200 to port both parts. If I'm going to get them ported, I would like to coat them too. Unfortunately he does not use high-temp coatings.

I'll look into Grimmspeed and see what their prices are. Thanks

That was my thought. Just wanted to make sure it was worth it though.

Again, I wasn't sure whether or not porting the manifold and turbine housing was cost effective.

I picked up a ported mani and sent it to Swain for coating. The total was like $600 when it was all said and done. Was it worth it for that extra 25whp? That depends on who you ask.

Looking at my spreadsheet:

Manifold $275
Coating $195

$470

So I exaggerated a little, but this doesn't include shipping costs or the tap for EGT probe.

You get the idea.

You mean Swain charged you $275 to port the manifold, then another $195 to coat it? Your total bill was $470 from Swain?

I already have a manifold - another option for me is to send it to Buschur. They'll port it and coat it for $195.

I picked up a ported manifold outright for that price (instead of sending in the stocker that was still on my car) then I sent it to Swain.

I can't speak for Buschur's coating or the stuff say, MAP does, but Swain's **** is legit.

It's good information to have, but I'm kinda OCD like that.

I'll PM you a link.

Ok, so follow-up question -

Now that I HAVE decided to port the manifold and turbine housing + coating, I'm on the fence as to whether I want to run the 3" Megan O2 housing or a MAP divided O2 housing with wastegate dump?

Any thoughts on these 2 parts with the EF3?
