Tranny improvements
It all boils down to are you going to mainly DD the car or track it and do you have $ to spend if you have some cash set aside and are going to mod/track the car a good bit I would say get it built if for anything at least you'll have some peace of mind.
Stock tranny treated with care with proper maintenance will last long years. I always refused to launch my Evo I would do roll pulls race. Although I would fail to abide by my own rules
There isnt a lot of weak points on the 5 speed. It can handle its self, But first L2 Launch and preload.
I Ran one without oil for 30 miles or so on the highway didnt even notice one bit and because i didnt notice all the oil leaked out on the highway 5th Gear roller bearing halfs Blew apart and jammed 5th gear to being stuck, Luckily i was just pulling into my garage when that happend. The Tcase bearing inner seal went out completly and all my trans fluid flushed thru the Tcase on the passanger side, and exitied thru the breather on the Tcase.
That seal cost me a Tcase and a Trans :/
It was still shifting in to gears and grabing and keeping it in gear and everything go figure.

Jackstransmission sells an "indestructible" transfer case and can build you a bulletproof transmission... That's a pretty extreme option for your build though. I have their standard rebuild or "performance" rebuild and it has performed very well. They "blueprint" their syncros while rebuilding the tranny, which improves shifting dramatically.
Usually transmission failures are due to loosing the fluid or blowing syncros from sloppy shifts or improperly adjusted clutches. The 5 speeds are excellent in stock form, it's really a matter of preventive maintenance for longevity..
You'll most likely blow your front diff (ie in transfer case), from a bad launch, before you blow your transmission. Especially if you have an 03-04 model (non ACD).

Keep in mind that even an "upgraded" transmission can still break. Ask yourself this...will you have enough money to upgrade and then keep repairing an upgraded trans if you fail to drive it properly?
Unless you're making some big power, I really don't see the need to beef up your tranny.
