EVO IX Turbo...Convert to Ball Bearing.

Can a Ball Bearing conversion be done to the stock IX turbo? I want that stock/sleeper look. Yeah there are plenty of stock frame turbos out there. Also, wondering on cost.

Also, I have a Borg Warner Bullseye S362 extended tip/.70 and would like to convert that to Ball Bearing as well. Can it be done as well. I know the EFR series is ball bearing.

Need to know a reputable company in the US that can do this conversion. Yeah yeah, I did a search in google and the forums. Looks like FP only does conversions on their green, red, and black turbos from JB to BB.

The wife has the S362 in her Forester...

I'm sure if you really wanted it, FP could do a BB conversion for you, but it kinda seems that the money you would spend on that, just get a BB green, spools very close to stock and potential fir alot more power.

if you want (better) response than the 9 turbo, the only thing i've experienced is the hks 7460r - beware though, those things blow easily

Here's a current discussion we have about BB vs JB in terms of spool characteristics.

There would be no appreciable spool difference in a TD05H frame turbocharger between the two. Transient wouldn't be vastly improved either given the size of the turbocharger. Since there's very little benefit we tend to stick to the larger frame stuff.

Read over this.. Good discussion. I knew going in that the response will be improved but the lag cannot be fixed on that size of a turbo.

Does anyone do titanium wheel upgrades on the stock ix turbo? The 6.5 tme turbo is very expensive.

You can do the 6.5 turbine upgrade yourself....^ I did for a yr. and half; it ran strong. Now I have a billet 20g mated to it.

A TME IX, which is what the OP has described above would be a cost effective alternative. FP used to do these sort of one off, MHI parts bin combinations. But, that was before they had developed their own comprehensive in-house range of 16G stock appearing turbos.

I don't know if FP still makes the FP White. There was a guy in Texas who auto-x'ed with a FP White/9.0cm.

Blouch used to do these sorts of bespoke custom combos with the TiAl turbine wheels as well. CBRD will still make you a BB BBK-Lite, or a BB BBK-Full. Either of which should fill the bill.

I recently asked FP but they said no go to building either a BB 71HTA, or a 71HTA with a TiAl turbine wheel. You could do a 71HTA/9.8, an FP White/9.8, or your IX/9.8 all w/o parental supervision of course.

EDIT: There are a couple British turbo shops that do BB conversions on 16G's and they'll do a BB IX with a TiAl turbine. But, you best get your wallet stocked and ready because you'll need mucho pounds sterling.

This sounds like a very interesting idea - ported coated ball bearing upgraded turbo stock ix turbo...

I've had the FP Green ball bearing, hks 7460r, and obviously the stock turbo. the hks 7460r was faster than the stock turbo and more power than the fp green, or felt like it anyway due to how fast the spool was. upgrading the stock turbo may not be a terrible idea.

Recommendations as to where I can get the 6.5 turbine upgrade?

Reason, I ask of all this is b/c I do a lot of intown driving. Light to light and occasional backroad spirited driving. I miss the next to nothing lag in my 05' STi stock turbo. There's no way I'll ever max out or do any highspeed runs in the evo.

A company in England offers a BB conversion for the stock 9 turbo. I forgot which one though.

I have no clue, I bought mine from a friend locally, I'm not sure where he got it from; But the packaging on the turbo looked Japanese. Contact gtpumps and ask for a geniune TME turbine. TD05HRA the "HRA" are titanium alloy and TD05RS, i think have titanium alloy turbine as well. If you want ultimate spool get a titanium alloy turbine with a magnesium compressor wheel. I've yet to see anybody on this forum piece these together. But beware magnesium compressor wheels are infamous known to shatter wheen boosted over 24-25psi. Downgrading to 9.8 hotside might get you that instant spool you're looking for.

You are correct about the magnesium exploding! Wondering if anyone has a titanium cartridge and something that's not an exploding magnesium.
