Autocross turbo selection

Looking to upgrade my Viii 9.8 hotside turbo in a few months. I will be using the car for autocross and road coarse at englishtown next year. In not looking to go meth or e85. Ill be running 100 or 93oct. I was really partial to a green but the more I read the less excited I am. Just looking for some suggestions preferably first hand from people competing.

Thanks

if you're new to autox and track just keep the stock turbo or upgrade to a evo9

I have the HTA green but wish I had something a bit faster spooling for autox

If you haven't actually autocrossed yet, keep your stock turbo for now to see how it suits your driving style and try to see how much spool you're willing to sacrifice.

Does the Evo 8 turbo offer any advantage with the smaller diffuser when identical hotside's are used?

So the 9 spools that much better? Isn't the greens power band much wider and better for autocross?

9 spools later.

Honestly keep the 8 turbo and see how you do with it.

I think he mean't compared to the Green, not the VIII turbo.

Not much of a difference between a IX and VIII turbo, hardly noticeable. The VIII spool compared to the Green will absolutely be noticeably slower. I also say to keep your stock turbo for now.

Skip those Englishtown road coarse events btw. You want to drive on a track, go to Millville. You'll be much safer and have a much better time.

Hi: I'll pretty much echo what everyone else has responded up to this point...for auto-x use, keep the 9.8 hotside on your VIII turbo. If you swap from the 9.8 up to the 10.5cm housing, turbo spoolup will suffer by approximately 200-300 RPM.

Or if you are really set on changing the turbo, look for a TME 6.5. It has the same 10.5 hotside housing, but with a titanium impeller.

I autocrossed my evo with the TME, and you can get usable boost 200-300 rpm earlier than with the stock 9.8 turbo. With that turbo, I could hit full boost around 2500 rpm. I later installed a BBK full, and with that turbo, I could get full boost by 3100 rpm.

The bbk was a much stronger turbo (obviously), but the TME was more fun to drive because of the almost instantaneous boost when getting on the throttle. The TME was much easier to live with when driving in heavy traffic too.

But like others have already said, stick with the stock turbo if you autox. Changing the turbo bumps you to SM which is a very expensive class to run.

The USDM VIII 16G turbo fitted as it was, from the factory, with the 9.8cm hotside, is pretty much, bang for the buck, as good as it gets for auto-crossing. Oh yeah sure, the JDM VIII RS turbo which also had the 9.8cm housing was a bit better due to its being fitted with the titanium turbine wheel. But, the even the earlier TME VI turbo was compromised a bit by the slower spooling 10.5cm housing. For spoolup the 9.8 housing is better than the 10.5 obviously. The looser 10.5 spools slower but frees up about 10 WHP on the topend.
