Play in rear axles. Diff bearings?

Hey guys.

So the ongoing issue of my rear end noise. (See here for previous thread).

05 JDM evo 9, LSD ACD, mechanical JDM RS rear LSD

I'm getting a speed only related whine/drone that seems to be coming from the rear. It sounds very similar to rear diff pinion bearing failure noises I've looked up. (There is more information in my other thread and a video).

The question: No leaks. There is no play in the drive shaft at all. There is some vertical play in each of the axles at the diff, quite a noticeable amount. An indication of axle bearings going bad or normal?

Thanks for reading.

it could be the bearings but I would drop the diff and inspect it further, the whining noise sounds like a bigger issue

Rear axle whine is caused by the ring/pinion gear mesh out of adjustment. It may need new bearings or just re-shimmed. Diagnosis beyond this is impossible without inspection.

Thanks. I've seen diagnosis being aided by checking the play in the driveshaft, not in an evo though. To clarify, some play in the rear axles at the diff is not abnormal with evos?

I'll get started on dropping the diff quite soon then.
