Evo 8 Clutch, Wheel, Cams
Evo 8 Clutch, Wheel, Cams
Hello. Once again redundant post, sorry about that. Looking at putting in new clutch, wheel, and cams. Would like to keep the car street friendly, and try not to kill the tranny. Have been looking at ACT HD/XT plates with SS disc. Also have been looking at Competition Clutch 2100 Stage 2 kit, and 2600 Stage 3 kit. From what I gathered disc is better than puck style set up for what I am trying to do. As far as the wheel goes was wondering if I should keep the weight stock or go a pound or two lighter. And looking at cams without having to change the valvetrain. GSC S1 or HKS 272/272, 272/280, 280/280, 274/278. Any advice as always is appreciated. Thank you.

I originally had a sprung 6 puck clutch in my car and that was rough trying to DD. It lasted less than 20k miles. I would say go for the comp clutch stage 2 or the ACT HDSS.
If stock valvetrain I'd go with the S1's.

I was hoping to get a disc that would be rated at around 500 ft.lbs. I am still trying to figure out which pressure plate to go with. Is 2100 pounds of clamp load enough? Should I get 2600 pound plate? As far as being a tight ***, and not wanting to upgrade the valvetrain all I can say is that it is true.

I am trying to put down 400+ whp, so I don't know if Competition Clutch Stage 2 is good enough for that, HD/SS should be. I was hoping to get a disc that would be rated at around 500 ft.lbs. Part of the reason that I am interested in S1 cams is because of the rough idle of S2 cams like GSC S2 or Kelfords 272. HKS cams have much smoother idle, granted they are not as aggressive but I am not trying to extract maximum hp out. I want to have a moderate all rounder. So any feedback on HKS cams would be much appreciated. I was also having a look at Buddy Club cams, they idle well however there is isn't as much info on them out there. Do you need to upgrade the valvetrain to run Buddy Club cams?

Yup, HKS 272/272 here revving to 8500rpm
Currently making 460 whp stock block/head(aside from cams and studs)/ecu with zero idling or daily driving issues.

I have HKS 264/272 cams in my Evo 8. Stock springs & retainers now for 148K + miles on this tune. I also went with Vishnu's cam gears set at -3,-3 which made a big difference over stock cam gears on the same setup. Nice power upgrade over stock and idles like stock. Zero issues DD. My original tune netted me 281HP on a DynoDynamics Dyno at Vishnu on CA 91 Oct.
I recently had my head rebuilt due to bent exhaust valves when my timing jumped some teeth but the shop said all was good with the springs and retainers after they inspected them (10K miles ago).
*Disclaimer since I posted about my idle in another thread: My idle has been finicky since my original tune years ago by Shiv at Vishnu over 148K miles ago but it is tuner related vs. cam related. You can tune in or out the cams to idle like a V8 or stock. Shiv didn't do such a good job on my idle...but aside from my idle, it pulls strong! Just to clarify my car idles like stock but then dips several hundred rpms from time to time...(tuner related per a couple of local tuners I've spoken to over the phone). Just to clarify my previous 'idles like stock' comment.
Hope this helps

I've been running 264/272 HKS cams for 3 years on the stock valvetrain. These cams are pretty mild as well as most HKS cams in comparison to other brands of the same label (Kelfords 272/BC 272 etc..) I'm making 374whp but cams would only be a part of that power. If you are looking for that lopey idle, I get it on occasion when I come to a stop. The tune can affect that too.
I've noticed people have gotten away with HKS 272 on stock valve springs but HKS 280s and S2's (which I think are GSC 274s) are just asking for trouble.

I hear a lot of bad things about BC cams from people here and from a particular well known shop I visit on occasion. Mixed reviews about Kelfords and, in my limited experience, I've never really heard anything about Buddy Club. Find out who makes their cams (if not them) because it could just be a rebranded cam of another make.
If you haven't noticed, this is all hearsay, so take it with a grain of salt.

The S2 Cams are suggest to run on our upgraded Beehive valve spring replacement or can be run at the stock revlimit and factory boost on the stock spring

If you're considering hks cams then you may as well not even swap them. I agree with the tight *** comment; I bought some 264 cams, and am now swapping to s2's because i didn't think ahead in terms of future power goals.
GSC S1's will go pretty far for a street car. I'd be comfortable with them up to an FP 73HTA Green on a 2.0.
The ACT HD SS is a good 510 lb-ft street /daily clutch. I had one, then tried a Clutchmasters FX300. That wasn't very good for a daily w/ city commute so I put in a Competition Clutch Stage 2 spring kevlar kit and it is ok. In hindsight I would have bought a new disc for the ACT and put it back in.
That said, I do have the ACT and Clutchmasters for sale here

i have had many cars with act clutches. they are solid clutches, but with the evo there are reported lock outs. i went with the competition segmented ceramic clutch kit and their fly wheel. great combo. a little tricky from the light but u get use to it. it supposedly hold 525tq. my plan is 500whp daily drive. i also went with the gsc s2. idles very good, on stock turbo with springs and retainers i made 404 on dyno jet. most shops here recommend kelfords for the evo 8 and gsc for evo 9
