Do I need a catchcan and if so, which one????

Hey guys, real quick about my setup:
DBB FP Black
GSC S3's
Speed Density
Stock Bottom End

I think those are pretty much the mods that will matter for this. Anyways, I've had my dipstick blow out a couple times recently and was wondering do I NEED a catch can or could this be caused by a faulty pcv valve. I was told that at higher boost pressures then stock, pcv valves can go out alot quicker. I just replaced mine a little over a year ago when I was still on a stock turbo. Now, if I need a catch can thats fine. I'm just really confused on how the setup would go. Wouldnt I need a 3-port catch can? Intake Manifold, PCV Valve, and the valve cover port. Any insight would be great. I've read through a bunch of threads and I'm still confused or how I would route this. And no I will not be venting back into the intake at all. Thanks in advance guys.

Hello-

Yes it is a very good idea to run a catch can. It helps with many different things on your car such as keeping the intercooler/piping clean and helping vent the crankcase.

I use a 2-port catch can. I used the STM -6AN valve cover fittings (removed my PCV) and a JMFab vented catch can. I then capped the port on the intake manifold. When I start my car I can see the vapors coming out of the catch can, so I know it's working.

I've been using this setup for a while and it works great.

Sure thing!

It shouldn't be to bad money wise. Catch can will be around $110, STM fittings $45 and then you need some -AN lines.

Also, just a note, when you install the STM fittings, use some JB Weld to keep them in the valve cover.

Hey also, did u just let the L-shape portion that comes off the valve cover vent to atmosphere or did u plug it, I think that's where I'm most confused.

I pulled the whole L shaped bracket off the valve cover, because that is where one of the STM -6AN fittings goes.

I had my valve cover off the car already and I put it on the ground with my feet pressed against (while I sat down) and used a huge pair of pliers to slowly work it back and forth to pull it out.

You pull the L-shaped piece off the valve cover with some pliers and install the rear STM fitting there.

Also be sure to relocate a PCV valve to inlet of the catchcan. This will keep it from being pressurized under boost. I have had catchcans blow apart because they saw boost.

Never heard of putting the PCV in like that, not sure that is necessary or needed.

My catch can is vented, haven't had any issues. As long as it is vented and not a closed catch can, you should be fine.

So wat happens to the port on the Intake manifold? Since the catch can will be occupied by the valve cover ports?

Nevermind, I just saw in the first post you capped it. What did you cap it with?

Yup, I capped it off. I used a rubber cap and also a zip tie to make sure it wasn't going anywhere.

I used a cap that looks like these:

Also, me and u have a similar setup besides a built motor and im sure a few other things. might be a stupid question, but is this catch can limited to a certain power level or does it not matter?
