Trans life for guys making 750+hp?

Just wondering what kind of life you guys are getting out of transmissions. I know my car is making a fair bit over 800 at 40 lbs and I rarely turn the power down. I'm getting ready to pull the trans tomorrow and pull it apart again, I pulled a gear face (tooth) off what looks like the pinion gear (flopped out onto the drain pan when changing fluids), it's either a ring or pinion gear and I doubt it's the ring gear. That means a new output shaft at minimum, and might as well put some fresh synchros and maybe synchro gears depending on how the wear looks. both shafts (input and output) are original shafts with 100k miles on them and mostly all new gears with the exception of first. I'm assuming this is fairly normal for these power levels. I wish someone would start making some dog gears in the United States for our cars ......

IIRC shep has access to better gears of the 6 spd which with his build is rated at 650 whp as compared to the 350 or so of the stock 6 spd. 800 is a a&&l*#d of power though :-) not sure anything is gonna hold for too long

Try him for the 5 speed if that is what you have. im sure they can answer all the questions. Or give Jon at TRE a call he has a great reputation as well.

To furhter answer your question ...it sounds like the tranny has been apart several times but needs to be completely gone thru as it has 100 K on it. Maybe even have to replace it if the case and shafts and gears will need work.

If you get a shep built trans with upgraded billet output tube and REM ISF etc, it will increase the life substantially. However, it really depends on what you are doing with the car. If you are launching the car a lot at that power level (or really anything too much over 400whp) for drag racing etc, your driveline life is going to be very short. I believe Joey ("Junk Box Evo") said he gets 30-40 passes out of a built transfer case. The other end of it, if you don't launch a ton the life will be much longer. I've done over 20k miles at 650whp before I built mine (whole car was apart so figured might as well, transmission was still working perfectly) on my first evo, however when shep took it apart the wear was showing (as a disclaimer I'm not sure how the transmission was treated before my ownership, so it possibly could have been damaged at lower power levels with the previous owner). So really it depends a lot on your driving style, but nothing is going to last forever at that kind of power level.

I'm obviously not expecting it too last forever, just wanted to get a feel for how much life other people were getting out of transmissions. I don't ever launch my car on the street and haven't yet had it to the track on a good tire. What I do a lot of is second thru 4th pulls and 3rd through 4th pulls. It sees a lot of shifts at 9k+ which is obviously rough on synchros. This time it's not synchro related, it simply pulled a a tooth off a gear. I will be rebuilding the trans myself as I did the last time, it already has a billet output tube to the tcase. IMO all the remming and tricks that are done by the trans shops isn't a bad idea, but bottom line is they are all still stock gearsets and parts, about the only thing that's gonna stand up longer to beating a banging gears at big power levels and high revs is a dog box, but I could rebuild a synchro trans myself about 8 times for the price of PPG set lol. "WRC-LVR" I'm talking about 5 speed trannys sorry. We do have a kid here in east Indiana that autox's the **** out of a 6 speed at 500 or so hp, but he says its gettin wore out after about 2 seasons of it.

lol Tony, I promise I'm not trying to break it. If I hadn't changed the tranny fluid I would have never known and probably tore more stuff up.

I was draining the fluid and looking at the magnet and was like looks pretty good just a little metal dust, then I heard a thud and saw this laying on the drain pan. No idea how long I was driving it like that, but its coming out in a few hours, might even split the cases tonight and start pressing gears off if I feel froggy.

Found where the missing piece of the puzzle came from, the pinion gear on the output shaft as suspected. Little wear showing on a sleeve and some synchro gears as well, but nothing else looks damaged.

I love my 4.0fd... If you shot peen, rem polish, radius the teeth... Stop using shock proof if you are... Use mt-90 or motul 300 and everything should work out just fine

It's not the power it's the torque. If you magically made 1000whp and 300 pounds of torque you'd be fine, torque breaks trannys.

Isn't the tooth size on aftermarket R&P larger due to the ratio change. You may gain a bit of strength there.
