Bought an 03 evo 8 not running

So here's my dilemma. I am an evo noob, and I have done quite a bit of research the past 24hrs. I bought my evo torn apart, as they where replacing bearings. I am going to take the motor to my machine shop just to inspect everything to make sure there's not damage I didn't know about. They head is still attached, rods and pistons are still in. Should I go ahead and fork out the cash and do forged internals, or save the money, put some good bearings, arp rod bolts, and arp main studs, then spend that money on cams and a tune. My goal is honestly 400-450awhp. I've heard 400awtq is really the max on stock block.

What would you do?

Wait and see what the machine shop says first-- you might find that your in for a hell of a bill.

I'm hoping not. The crank is "newsed" new/used. So they'll expect it for cracks, polish, balance, etc.. They may need to hone it, not sure. But hoping I can get out of there for cheap.

Don't do work to that motor until you really find out what's wrong.

Well that's what I'm doing, I was just curious if I should just build it while i'm here, or put it back together and do cams and a tune.

I mean if I was in your situation, you plan on keeping the car awhile, and I had the funds I would find out what's wrong and build it. I say this because, you'll be happy with 350awhp for a few months and then want more and more and more. Building the motor will cause a lot of downtime so I mean while it's already all apart might as well since you're paying for most of the labor anyway. Just my 2 cents.

I agree with this. It's already in need of engine work so just do it once the right way and be done. That way the engine part of a build is already done and you never have to think "can the engine handle that"

Alright, I had everything checked, and everything is in excellent condition. Not even a mark on the cyl walls. Having the crank polished/balanced. New bearings, arp studs, pulling the head off and putting a new head gasket, arp head studs, 272 cams. Then put her back in!

Replace the oil cooler and flush the hell out of the system at minimum. Who knows why they were doing bearings in the first place. Stay away far away from 400 torque with a stock motor or you will regret your decision later.
