Rear end Clunk when shifting hard

I have noticed that when I am shifting hard (letting the clutch out much faster than casual) I hear a loud clunk coming from the rear end. I have recently changed the transmission fluid with Redline, changed the rear diff fluid with Lucas LSD fluid @ 90K miles. I recall it making the sound before the fluid changes so I know it did not have an effect on the noise. I am assuming it is play in the drive shaft U joint to the rear diff. Is there any way of telling how much play is too much. When I was last under the car I could twist the drive shaft by hand and get about 1/4-1/3" of rotation. Is this sound normal or should I be looking into replacing the U joints?
Thanks

It's normal for these cars, one way to reduce it is to replace your rear differential bushings and mustache bar bushings with stiffer ones. replacing the engine mounts and the driveshaft carrier bushings will also help a bit.

This is it. The factory bushings are soft for comfort and keeping noise down. Replacing the diff carrier bushings help the most than replace the rest to really hold down the rear end. Expect some noise to become audible after the bushing install. It's not your rear diff committing suicide haha its just the vibrations being transferred to the frame in the form of whine.

Could be the rear diff gears but typically you will get whine when driving. The rear control arm bushings, mustache bar and side diff supports can all be swapped out and it will eliminate the rear end moving, make it more durable and get rid of the clunking noises.

Haha I love that David still comes on here to drop knowledge on us. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you guys still offer the lightest rear diff carrier option available?

I think it's the only one now ams doesn't seem to be making their version anymore. At least it wasn't on their site last I checked couple weeks ago and lancershop isn't carrying it anymore either.

Funny or not, I go the fastest when I get the "clunk" on the shift.

I got sick of that clunking noise and replaced the diff supports. The ones he sells actually. Never made another noise again. I also did the driveshaft carrier supports at the same time but I know it was the diff supports making that noise.
