Oil leak in turbine side *help*

Hey guys i recently bought a used evo 9 turbo and long story short i see oil at the turbine side. When i first inspected the turbo there was no oil there at all. But now i see small drip of oil. Could this be the way i stored the turbo? It was upside down at one point. The oil lines are off and the it has minimum shaft play.

Just wondering if its the way i held the turbo that could cause oil in the turbine? Any help is appreciated. Thank you

are you saying it was stored and now you see oil... or you have ran it and now there is oil? from storage thats a non issue... oil does what oil does and eventually its gonna make it past the seals... but if you had it on the car and you see oil now then you either need a catchcan or you may have to high of crankcase pressure.... meaning you need a better catch can or a rebuild...

No i never ran it. Like when i first bought it i looked inside the turbine housing and there was no oil. And the previous owner literally just took off the turbo an hour before i bought it.

My question is could the oil somehow go past the seal due to the way i was keeping the turbo? (Upside down or whatever)

No it cannot. Think about how much pressure the oil is under when the engine is running at full boost. If the "drip" occurred with the turbo off the car though how do you know it came from inside the chra? Could it have gotten dripped on from somewhere else. It is impossible to diagnose off the car I would think. Also the oil lines were taken off. Maybe it dripped from there.

What's strange is that when he took it off the car there was oil there but now there is. I deffinally didn't drip oil in there.

You're freaking out for nothing. Is there in or out play, side to side play? How do the blades look on exhaust/compressor sides? You're not going to know unless you slap it on or split the turbo and look in it

im pretty positive oil doesnt drip from the turbine side. its contained in the center section. it doesnt touch the blades thats visible at all.

If you have oil in the CHRA and you turn the turbo on its side the oil will drain through the gap in the turbine or compressor side gas control ring. So what you're seeing is perfectly normal if it was stored with it sitting straight up and down.

Thank you. I thought so because it wouldnt make any sense that there was no oil in there when it was taken off the car and now there is. Thanks mike.
