2 questions here regarding EVO IX Exhausts:
A 02 dump like the one he e kobz linked is similiar to a "screamer pipe" like off a external wastegate and is illegal is aus and will get you defected your best bet is to get a Megan stainless steel 02 housing and any 3" downpipe from that which will bolt up to our cat back.
The INvidia ones are great but make sure you buy the 02 housing and the downpipe as you have to use them together from memory as it doesn't use the donut gasket.
Shipping those items might be expensive so if not i'd recommend to you get a tomei dump pipe and a tomei 02 housing as there should be many of those over the ditch

really?!, why?!… look, I'm not surprised as almost EVERYTHING is a DEFECT here;
*Anything over 98db exhaust & remote controlled exhausts.
(i think its dropped down to 96db in the recent years, which is silly because theres Harley Davidsons out there that seriously tear up your ear drums when they throttle it)
*hi-flow cats under 200 cell
*Blow off valves thats vented
*Pod style air-filters without an enclosed box
*any form of Neon lighting
*2 sizes over stock rim sizes
*Any gauges above the dashboard
*and turbo-timers are also illegal
So the second one at the bottom without any protruded pipe is "LEGAL" here right?
but the guy who sold me the car gave me this piece;

(that small thing, does the car have two cats?)
and from what it looks like underneath, limited view without a hoist or jack;

whatever it is, it looks like a 3" down pipe?
and it ends somewhere here; looking from the engine bay near the turbo + Manifold

So if i was to keep it "legal" in Kangaroo land here….
what should i buy to suit the existing front pipe (shown in pic) and an aftermarket Cat & cat-back exhaust?
Sorry for the questions or trouble.

do hiflow cats make a big difference with performance ?
damn, the Tanabe is an oval style…
i was hoping more the Invidia N1

but that looks loud….
unless the exhaust shop can cut out the little resonator and replace it with a quieter one…
has anyone here tried this one?
Do you have emissions? Performance wise, a test pipe would yield the greatest gains but I dont know if thats an option for you. The medallion has an oval muffler but its pretty discrete as seen here:

I cant speak to the Invidia N1 but I'm fairly confident it will be significantly louder than the tanabe based on my experience with similar exhausts.

A high flow cat with will be beneficial in terms of hp gains, it won't be a crazy increase but a increase no less. Definitely run a test if you can get away with it. Having a test pipe will also make it a little louder, a cat or a high flow cat can act as a little sound deadening unit. I've never heard the Invidia N1 in person but I can tell you that other exhausts with that same design are going to be loud. I personally love my Tanabe Medallion. Where I love the cops will pull you over if you're exhaust too loud, I see Subarus getting busted all the time. So the Tanabe Medallion helps me stay discrete. As far as the oval canister goes you can barely even notice it unless you're standing far back and look at it from an angle. And as mentioned above it sounds damn good.
If you can go the test pipe route- go for a resonated version like this-
I've personally installed this with a Tanabe catback and it sounds perfect. Not too loud, not too quiet, and no additional restrictions.

Look I'm gonna sound like an un educated enthusiast here…
but what is the purpose of the test pipe?, what are the advantages and disadvantages of having one?
i wouldn't be surprised if someone from Aus on this website, jumped out again and said…"You'll get defected!"
Yeh i have watched some videos online about the Invidia N1 and yeah… its a real risk with the cops. In aus, our emissions and noise are quite stringent. As i mentioned 96db…
Are 4G63s loud in general?…
i mean, i noticed BMWs are all friggin LOUD… even factory 3 series seem loud.
The reason i had my eye on the Invidia N1 was due to the fact that years ago (2001) i owned a Toyota JZA80 RZ supra… and i had even deleted the resonator to get more aggressive sound.
Being a 6Cyl, they seem a lot quieter with a deeper tone. Especially at low revs between 3k - 5k rpms, you would barely notice it. (i noticed the same goes for the BNR34 aswell, they only scream at high revs).
But yeah, the 4g63 with this form of exhaust. The sound does seem more high pitched…
In regards to the tanabe, it seems like a well respected brand here and i do respect that. However, i don't think i could personally live with an oval exhaust.
Id probably go down the route of cutting in a larger resonator or even putting two resonators if need be.

The catalytic converter is very restrictive. Think of it as trying to sprint while blocking your mouth, it's very hard to breathe and you slow down. Take away your hand and now you can breathe freely. In a turbo car, the same applies. The less restriction you have the better.
Also I take that since your from Australia, you probably have an evo with the jdm rear bumper. Just keep that in mind when buying an exhaust as it is specific for that bumper.
If you wanna go cannon style exhaust I suggest the Tomei cat back. It looks awesome and will most likely meet your noise restrictions.

The catalytic converter (cat) is a restriction on most turbo applications as it causes more back pressure. To alleviate this you have a few options:
1. High flow cat- flows better, might still pass emissions testing, etc.
2. Test pipe- simply a 3" pipe with flanges on it, zero restrictions here.
3. Resonated Test pipe- same as #2 with the addition of a resonator to quiet it down more.
If you have emissions testing annually that will likely effect your decision. Although aftermarket tuning can fake a good emissions reading (so I've heard, I don't have emissions here, maybe someone else can comment on that) regardless of the exhaust configuration.
I'm sure you could do some further searching on the forum to find another exhaust quieter than the N1. I've got a buschur exhaust on mine that came with the car when I bought it and its LOUD. I installed a Tanabe on a customers car and it sounded perfect. Why the hate on the oval muffler?

the Aussie model has the JDM bumper with the rear diffuser.
in regards to the bumper…the two problems are;
the Invidia N1 looks nice, but in ALL advertisements it DOES NOT in any way…mention which bumper it suits. (But in the pics they include a resonator)
the Tomei one looks nice, indicates the two different types of exhaust they have to suit. (but does NOT include a resonator)
As much as i appreciate your suggestion, i don't think the Tomei or invidia both meet regulations for sound (with or without a tiny little hot-dog resonator)
HKS have come up with a big resonator on one of the exhausts in their production line;
In terms of price and performance the Muse 02 Dump is hard to beat. It looks beautiful, gives solid gains, and only costs 240 bucks shipped. The MAP 02 dump is equally as good but is costs a little bit more than than the Muse 02 dump. However MAP does offer product that is pretty cool, its called the Eliminator 02 dump downpipe. Its essentially a downpipe with the 02 housing built in to it. This is nice because its just one piece, not two. Then there are 02 dumps from companies like Toxicfab which are pretty pricey but are absolute works of art. In my opinion you should just get the MAP eliminator 02 dump downpipe and kill birds with one stone.
As far as compatibality goes most exhaust parts from different are compatible with each other. The only company I can think of off the top of my head that has special flanges that only work with their products is AMS. Most Evo 8/9 exhaust have two flanges where as AMS exhaust parts have 3.

Ive had a look online for the "muse o2" dump that is popular amongst tuners here.
However, that would the the Screamer type right?
Does the muse come in a dump housing ?
The Muse 02 Dump is a regular 02 dump. I've never heard them be called a screamer pipe until you said your friend called it that. Like I said at the beginning of this thread there are two typed of 02 housings, dumps and recirculated....that's it. Your friend was more than likely referring to the 02 dump as a "screamer pipe" because of how loud they are. They are A LOT louder than recirculated housings.
