water pump leaking from weird spot..is this normal?

Hey guys, I recently realized that my coolant pressure system was pressurizing and proceeded to do a coolant pressure test. While doing that I noticed a crap load of coolant coming out from the water pump side and after taking the tb cover off noticed its coming from a "breather hole" for the water pump.

I have a built 2.4L motor and am using the MAP adapter plate with this. Not sure if that somehow is involved or caused this issue. I have 5k miles on the oem water pump.

Below I have circled in red where it is leaking from.
Is it normal? Did it blow a seal or something?

I was thinking of not using the MAP adapter plate and getting the WP from English Racing (since they weld the pump).

Pic is from under the car...

Did you make sure the o-ring was installed in the water pump before installation?

That "breather hole" is known as the weep hold. This will leak coolant when the shaft seal fails.

You need a new water pump.

Your water pump most likely needs replaced. I went through two OEM water pumps in under 17k miles. After loosing two OEM pumps I went with an electric pump myself.

As others have stated you are loosing coolant through the weep hole. I've gone through a couple water pumps as well. One was due to a failing hg and the 2nd one, I'm not to sure why it happened.

Just curious, I know you mentioned you are using MAP's spacer. Are you using your original water pump or is it a new pump as well? It's been a while since I looked into this but back when I was having water pump issues I found that it seemed to plague a lot of 05's which I see yours is as well.

I had bought a brand-new water pump from the dealer when I did this build which was last summer.

What do people do when they have this issue? I don't want this to keep on occurring.

Water pumps use a ceramic seal. It consists of two ceramic rings rubbing together with spring pressure behind one of the rings. Ceramic is very hard and will generally last a long time. However, get something harder than ceramic embedded in the surface and it is toast. Just the luck of the draw.

thanks for the info. I'm ordering another pump and will see how that one does. I'm hoping it was just a bad one.
