Blown Ignition Coils

2006 Evo
65,000 miles
Stock with tune

I was taking a little trip and got about 40 miles down the interstate when I lost a ridiculous amount of power. I pulled over and noticed one of my ignition coils was cracked open with melted plastic coming out the side. After a hell of a time with Advance Auto, I finally got a new coil and replaced it. I continued on and 40 more miles down the road, my other ignition coil did the exact same. More fun with Advance Auto and I replaced that coil. I drove the full 80 miles back home with no issues, however I'm worried that these coils will also blow at some point. Wondering if this has happened to anyone else or if somebody might know a cause and solution. Thanks!

Not too sure about the cause but I do remember one of the ignition coils on my messed up just as you described yours to be. My mechanic described it to be one of the worst he had seen on my then 05 TB with similar mileage.

If I am not mistaken, I believe we pinpointed the problem to be in the spark plug wiring. Have you already done your 60k service, checked your plugs etc? I'd probably recommend taking a glance to make sure the wires are A-OK as this MAY be the issue.

Hope this helps..

Jack

Wink

Also..something to think about: There is an insane amount of voltage that passes through these wires if I'm not mistaken. I'd check em out!

I've done the service and spark plugs have under 2000 miles on them but I went ahead and checked them as well as their gap, all checked out fine. Same story with the wires, all seemed well but just to be safe I'll probably order some tomorrow.

rather than replacing with stock coils again. might as well do the spoolinup cop. I'm on his used coil for the past 60k and its running great.

I've been thinking about doing COP and now I'm really leaning toward it but before I make a decision I just want to be sure there isn't a bigger problem with my car such as the ECU or something like that

I think I will just go ahead and go COP. I've been looking at the Nology but if y'all don't think they're worth it than I'll go with spoolinup.
