timing belt help needed asap

Im really kicking myself right now. Took my car to have the t belt and bs belt done by a guy who supposedly has done plenty. Car had no issues beforehand. Got a call saying ehoever did the t belt before had timed the car 1/2 a tooth off on both intake and exhaust cams. I said news to me because car ran fine and cam gears were zeroed out. Supposedly he put it back in time correctly and finished up the install and did cam seals as well as all new tensioners pulleys and water pump. Go to get the car and he mentions lifters are loud. At idle it sounded normal like they did before. He free reved the
Car and it sounded horrible and reved slow. He assured me it was the tune from the cams previously being off. I paid and attempted to leave and knew something was not right. Lifters are beating the **** out of the cams and I thought he didnt bleed them. Pulled up to a light and the car starts surging like idle going from 1k to 3k. Not to mention car has no power. I immediately called and he said he never removed the cams just installed the seals with a seal puller. He then makes suggestions like the lifters were like that when the car was brought to him. What does it sound like other than the obvious scam and wht legal options do I have? He says he has a shop nut does work out of his house. Isnt that fraud? He messed with the wrong evo owner and messed up by giving me a home address. Suggestions please. He is supposedly going to look at the car again tomorrow and see about fixing the issue.

I would suggest pulling the timing cover and get a wrench on the crank and try and line up the marks on the cam gears with the marks on the valve cover. From what you are saying, It sounds to me like cam timing is probably off and all that noise you are hearing are valves smacking into the pistons. If you cant check the cam timing yourself then take it to a different shop and have them check it. Its probably best not to drive it until you verify whats wrong. If it is valves hitting then continuing to drive it could result in a valve dropping and toasting the whole engine.

1/2 a tooth timing shouldn't make that much of a difference... English Racing offer a larger oil pump gear that retards timing by 1.5 - 2* (approximately 1/2 a tooth), and they haven't done any tuning changes to the cars with this mod. So IF it was as minor as half a tooth and he corrected it, then you shouldn't have any valve / piston issues, but it sounds like he has done more than that...

I would suggest you take your car to a reputable Evo shop and find out what he's done incorrectly and have them write up a list of what's wrong, then talk to a lawyer if you want to.

There are no reputable shops around my area. He has led me around and around. At this point im picking the car up having it inspected and whatever is wrong
I will have him pay for. He tried saying the lifter tick was from higher compression with the car now being in time lmao. He bit off more than he can chew and ****ed over the wrong and last person.

Perform a compression check.

I see you are in Tennessee. You should really consider towing it to an EVO shop.

Where in TN are you?

+1 on checking your timing marks by removing the upper timing cover (4 bolts) and cranking the motor over by hand at the crank about 6 times to verify the timing above at the cams and below at the crank line up like they should.

I kind of sounds like he might have timed it wrong. We had a guy here who had a similar issue. They timed the engine off the old 4G63 engines that were in the eclipse, which I am told is different then the Evo. Good luck man.

If you could bring it to Birmingham AL I could help you. Hope the pistons didn't get dinged too much.

I would worry more about the valves then the pistons. They bend really easily.
