Angry help, i thnk car is pinging.

i was racing a z28 and beat him, but i noticed a ticking sound coming from the engine bay. it think the car was pinging because the sound occured under heavy or full throttle only. it sounded like a tickcktickticktickticktick (about 5 to 10 every second). i went home and pulled 2 plugs, both seemed white like it was leaning out, but none were melted. i havent done anything wierd with my car lately, and this is the 1st time ive ever noticed it. i checked the plugs 2 months ago and they were perfect, mostly black still. now they are alot whiter. i have the emanage and it was on -6 at the most, and mostly at wot and high rpms. could it be bad gas? i last filled up at kroger but it was still 93. i have not touched any ignition timing maps on the emanage, so i dont think it is that. what should i do about this? what is a sign that i have more problem, or need to change boost or something? i was only running 19psi. i have a 255 warboro. i never encountered pinging on any other of my car,s but i always made sure i was running rich. i figured i was with 550 cc injectors and a fuel pump.

input from anyone is appreciated.

Dont think its pinging.. any loss of power along the power curve? i.e. timing retarding? If not.. shouldnt be.. must be the valves.. think that's pretty normal... normally pings occur for split seconds or successive split seconds and randomly.. not routinely like your every 5-10 every sec... they sound more like a ringing sound then ticking... like a bunch of marbles in a tin can...(hmm.. maybe it is.. u have a knock sensor? Get one.. every evo should have one.. the SAFCII has a good one if calibrated properly..)

i dont nitice any loss of power, but it does sound similar to like bee bee's from an air riflebeing dripped into a can successivly. it does seem to hold constant though. im not sure how to check for the timing retard... i have no monitoring equip. im thinking of resetting the ecu, see if that helps... i also reinitialized my emanage to 0 so it should drive from ecu stock. for a further measure, i added some octane booster jst incase. p.s. thanks for the quick responce.

- wouldd only 19 psi be able to know of 93 octane?

19-20psi should be in the safe zone on 93 octane, but no more

normally, successive pings will make the ECU retard timing.. the way you can feel this on the road is that the RPM climb tends to slow down in certain areas along the RPM curve...

If you have a dyno chart with AF settings, that would be easiest...

never dynoed it. but they start going negative from about 3500 rpms at like -3, then it moves onto -6 only at the very bottom at full throttle . i never had it set less than -6.

So far.. it sounds to me like you could be running too lean.. did u go the tuning on a dyno or on the road.. i think you may have several areas on the power curve where the settings are too lean... best now is to flatten your emanage corrections curve etc and keep it stock until you can tune the car on the dyno with proper AF readings..
