what's the deal with my oil?
what's the deal with my oil?
ok so I have an 04 stock motor bolt ons with evo 9 turbo and 25 - 26 psi on aem...I'm using amsoil 10w - 40...oil has not even 1000 miles and when I check the dipstick the **** smells like gas...it's pretty strong...why is that?

Two things, rings may not be seated---hopefully you didnt break in the motor on amsoil and you used reg oil for that purpose and two-- your tune is very rich causing the cylinder walls to wash down, not sealing rings and leaving residual gas in the oil.
Change your oil--dino oil and run it for 500 miles--report back.

I think you misunderstood me...my motor has 78k miles...it's the original motor...I mean since last time I changed the oil I still haven't put 1000 miles on it...now my car was tuned on aem...when you say tuned to rich you mean at wot? cruising on the highway it's anywhere from 15.5 - 16.5...wot it's 10.8 - 11.2 ish...now cold start in the morning it'll start at 11.5 and gets up to 16 ish when it's warm at idle...

A little lean at idle, a tad rich at WOT, not really a big deal. My oil always smells pretty acrid after 500-1000 after changing. Oil analysis has always showed some fuel, but not enough to be remotely concerned. A little fuel goes a long way in making the oil smell terrible..

You're running a lot more boost than stock. Its going to have more blow by, and the turbo is working harder, which means it runs hotter, which is harder on the oil. All contributing factors to making the oil smell worse than it used to.
well when we tried to tune on stock ecu there was a problem I don't remember what it was so i had an aem v1 and said screw it so we threw it in and all was good...I mean car runs good it's just that I noticed the smell...also let me ask you guys this...I don't have a catch can...I just vented the driver side valve cover port to atmosphere putting one of those little autozone filters on it...can not having a catch can cause the smell? I have been thinking about installing two -10 fittings on the valve cover and getting a can made but what's stopped me is being afraid of not being able to completely get the shavings out of the baffles...I know people remove the baffles and reinstall them with screws but I'm afraid to do that and a bolt back out...idk...I would just install a regular catch can using vacuum on driver side but a local evo shop said that wasn't going to do anything...
Venting/Recirculating the valve cover port on the exhaust side will not effect the gas getting into your oil.
This problem is usually caused by improperly tuned VTA BOV. If not compensated in between shifts the mixture will go rich (because of metered air being vented to atmosphere) the extra fuel may wash down the oil layer between the piston rings and the cyl walls. Overtime it will allow more unburned fuel mixture to slip past the rings into the crank case.

Ok so I change my oil every 2500 - 3000 miles...do I need to change it more frequently with this issue so it doesn't hurt the motor or do I need to change it more often until I figure this out?
I've got a stock bottom end with 78k and I can smell some gas if I take a sniff in the oil cap. Compression has been OK whenever I check it. The gas sure isn't helping anything, but as someone previously mentioned, it doesn't take a lot to make it smell like gas.
I'm pretty convinced its from high blow by which I think is almost inevitable when you pump over 200hp/liter out of an engine with 90s combustion chamber technology. My "solution" is to just stick to the low 3000 mile or less oil change interval.
