So it isn't a necessary part?

if i can afford to rebuild an engine, i most likely (i'd hope), be able to replace the oil cooler. i guess if i were to DD the car or drag race, it wouldn't be as important.

I'm sure that people would say that it depends on the application. Arguably not needed for drag racing.

Meh. Its there for a reason. Rebuilding motor.....extra 200-300 bux for a oil cooler. Not a big deal. I guess this is like the whole oil squirters in 4G64 blocks

Thanks...
$20 for a nice clean fix is on it's way. Love OEM solutions.
Any chance you've looked at the springs in them to see if they are the same?

As such...I've got a low mile oil cooler and filter housing assembly that's never been through an engine failure with HKS 160F thermostat installed in the housing. Hit me up if your interested.

was the mitsu P/N listed earlier in this thread the correct one for the outlander filter housing?

What can happen? I deleted squirters in my last motor, as well as balance shafts, and oil cooler..... and she ran Great! Made 800whp had the dog**** beat out of it and has logged about 10k miles...... no complaints here. I will be deleting all of the above on every single motor going forward as well.

I don't know on P/N. I jumped on ebay, searched "Outlander Oil Filter Housing" a couple popped up, one being a 2003 and visually...yeah, looks like it will work. Has the correct mount area for the alternator idler pulley and same shape as the EVO...$20 I'll chance it.

I haven't mounted it up and verified it's exactly the same yet though as I am waiting for the gasket to show up from STM. I'll pull the bypass out and compare it to the EVO parts. I'll probably toss in the EVO parts just for good measure anyway.

There are a number of differences physically with the 2003 outlander oil cooler housing. Because there is no internal routing and thermostat, the filter sits higher and closer to the block. Out of curiosity, I grabbed a Bosch Evo and outlander oil filter to compare. The outlander is the larger diameter similar to the Evo, but is also taller. Seems like a good option since the filter now sits higher.

The bypass was slightly different, but I'm not sure if it would change the oil pressure or not. You could visually tell they were different when next to each other, but it is on the order of 0.1mm. Seems intentional and not just manufacturing variation but it's pretty minor. I used the Evo internals... As you'll see why later.

The one difference that may cause a problem though is the thickness of the flange where the belt tensioner mounts. As seen below, it moves the tensioner about 3.5mm further from the block. I'm not using the tensioner, so not a concern for me but this seems like it would be a problem for most.

Last, just as a word of caution, if you buy the housing used, disassemble and inspect... Never know what you might find. I'm guessing this was some flood damage vehicle or something.
