blown head gasket??

Hey everyone,
Need some advice on my over heating issues. I have a 2004 Evo8 making abt 420whp and 377tq.I was at the last ratchet Friday at etown and car starts to overheat. I first notice the temp gauge went pass the half mark just before i attempted to make my second pass. I took a u turn from the line and head straight home. When i am cruising in forth it stays cool just abt half way on the temp gauge. It heats up faster in higher gears like fifth and at idle.
I check the oil no unusual substance in there and the coolant looks clear.
My fan is also coming on my mechanic told me is the head gasket and i am not 100% sure thats the problem so any input will be much appreciated thanks.

Also car is not smoking and no coolant leaks and the coolant bottle is not running over.

Does not sound like your mechanic has done any type of real diagnostic work. Sounds like he is shooting from the hip. Is he a real mechanic or is he a parts changer? If he wants to shoot from the hip and just throw parts in it why not start with a thermostat.

I was thinking the same thing.

never let people like that work on your car, they simply throw parts at the car and hope it gets fixed, i seriously wonder how they stay in business sometimes... you need to do a leakdown test to being with.

Yeah what is strange is that the temp don't stay up. Its goes up and down depending on rpm and gears you are in. I am assuming the temp would be up all the time if was the head gasket.

Not necessarily. I had an issue like this. Turns out I had a hole in my radiator and was leaking coolant. The overheating got progressively worse until it in fact blew the headgasket. I'd first check if there's air in your system. Are you running a half rad or full size radiator?

do a cylinder leakdown test, if all checks out fine, replace the thermostat to start with, might be getting stuck close briefly causing the spike in temp

Ok I am heading to another shop this morning to look closely at the car. I ask him to do a leak down test. If the leak down test show low compression in either of the cylinders that would implicate head gasket ?? I will keep my gingers crossed . However i already bought my new head gasket just in case .

If you have to have the head gasket changed I would have the timing belt changed also.

So i just got a second opinion and my other guy told me change the thermostat first. The reason he said is that the top radiator hose is hot and the other one just below it that runs to the thermostat is cold not even warm meaning maybe the coolant is not circulating properly.
