evo 9 turbo shaft play up and down

i bought a used evo 9 turbo that had 150k miles on it.it has more up and down play than my evo 8 turbo That has 86k. Im going to rebuild it myself. Do any one know if Putting in new bearings eliminate some of the up and down movement. There is no contact with the compressor housing.

Depends on the amount of movement. The real movement to be concerned about is if he shaft moves in/out. That's thrust bearing wear, and typically that's the first issue that arises.

ok thanks. in and out play is good. I read that the oil pressure floats/centers the shaft. ill just rebuild it do to high miles and update this post after.

Yes, oil takes the space up for the up/down play whenever car is running.
