Fresh Valve Job not sealing?
Hey all, recently bought an evo 9, had some issues , pulled the head and had it redone. I bolted the head on and did a leakdown and getting 50% leakdown on #1 cylinder and 15% on the rest (fresh rings/hone 0 run time) when I spray some kerosene in the exhaust ports it shoots back out, intake also. The head guy tells me that he's confident it will seal up with a little run time, what do you think? Also, would that be responsible for the majority of my leakage? Should I just fire it up and do a leakdown after everything breaks in?Thanks.

I would say if there isn't any run time I would at least seat the rings and then redo the leakdown test being he is right if the rings haven't seated all the way they there can be some issues there right off the bat. I would start it up a few times, let it warm up to operating temp and then redo the test and see what comes out of it.

Call gsc and have them give you the measurement that they require from where the valve sits to the tip of the valve. On my head it was way to much which made the valves hang open after machine shop did a valve job. I put oem lifters back in and it worked.

I had the lifters out 4 times. Put oem lifters back in and issue disappeared.

nah the valves shouldn't be leaking. If the valve seats where machined and lapped properly there should be no leak i smell some bull****. Guys if the cams are off all valves should be fully seated, regardless of lash adjusters... you can put a little bit of engine oil into the cylinder and redo the leakdown test, if numbers improve its the ring seals, if not its the valves.

Why the hell are you doing a leak down test on a fresh engine with zero run time? You're wasting your time. Put it together and run it.
