I made a thousand mile trip for Thanksgiving too. Anyway, I hope the carnage is not too bad. Good luck.

It won't be so bad. It's a great learning experience and a chance to install a new head gasket, better head studs, and get a built cylinder head!

No doubt! I've been eyeballing a set of GSC S2 cams and +1 valves anyway

stay with stock valve size. get new bronze valve guides and you might need a couple of rockers too.. check for cracks..

I know the damage is done but still I'm curious as to what happened. So, hoping for a report.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to pull the head tomorrow, if so I'll give an update

If you didn't properly adjust the timing belt tensioner when you performed the service it's probable that you jumped timing and had some P to V contact (not the good kind).

Bummer sorry to hear about that. Did you replace the tensioner as well when you did the timing belt service? And did you perform the service yourself or have a shop do it? If you did it yourself did you confirm that you can easily slide the grenade pin in and out to ensure proper tension?

not uncommon..

happened to me when the aux belt broke
can happen when you do not change the balance belt
or dont change the tensioner
or just do not tension everything correctly.. or overtension it..

I recently had this happen to me and it trashed head and pistons. valves bent/broke and smash into the spark plugs. 3/4 pistons done.

When I did the timing belt I replaced the tensioner as well as all other pulleys and water pump. I did it at the shop I work at, the grenade pin slid in and out really easy. I pulled #2 spark plug and it was all crushed in and the piston had 2 nasty holes in it so I've now just decided to pull the whole engine, when I pulled off the exhaust manifold and turbo I heard some rattling which ended up being 4 crushed valve faces. There was most definitely some unwanted P to V contact
