Big Scare - Oil Leak

I've been told to hand-tighten the oil filter when changing oil....Which I guess I didn't do enough as my car leaked a little oil as it warmed up today (thank god I saw oil on the garage floor - this could have been bad!)- I checked the oil filter and it was a little loose - so I re-tightened it and leak is gone...I've checked three times now after driving around town and everything looks cool.

I've always hand-tightened by oil filters and never had a problem before..... Maybe I just need get stronger

How tight are you guys tightening the oil filter?
Has anyone shook oil filter loose?
Any other concerns?

Thanks in advance

Tighten filter till gasket makes contact with flange, then tighten 3/4 of a turn.

I've always hand-tightened the oil filter too. I think something like 1/4 turn after it makes contact. After that, I take 'em off by hand too. I don't know how you'd describe it really, just make it "tight".

Glad you spotted it before it was a problem though.

it is possible that you are reusing the gasket.. and it needed to be extra tight

You always want to be careful that the old gasket did not stick to the engine when you remove a filter. If this happens and then you put on a new filter you wind up with 2 gaskets stacked up. Then the gaskets blow out and you have a big leak.

thanks

Thanks for all your replys....I've been keeping an eye on it, and everything seems fine....no leaks.

My guess is I was too gentle and did not tighten it enough....My first oil change on the EVO....I drove it for about 500 miles with no issue however, so I think it loosened over time.....roads in Michigan suck *** which may have contributed...

Dizzy's comment reflects what is written right on the side of the factory filter.

If I was you, I would go under the car and turn down the filter 1/4 of a turn to see if that seals things up. If it does, great! Just keep an eye on it until your next oil change.
