Normal tranny gear wear?

Had some oil leak at transmission inspection cover area, so I removed the cover to remove old sealant and put some new ones.

Found some gear wear marks and not sure if it is normal wear or I should be worried.

Metal shave on magnetic drain plug seems fine and normal (no metal chunks).

It is 03 EVO with 5 speed, and have been using mostly Redline MTL / MT-90 mix (2:1), tried Amsoil MTG MTF mix (2:1) once, but liked Redline mix more.

~47k miles on Odometer and a few track days per year, but never raced in competition.

Might try thicker Redline mix (MT-90 2 part and MTL 1 part) to have more gear protection yet acceptable gear shift when cold.

Hope gurus can comment on the gear wear. Thanks!

A little bit close up picture.

Oh BTW, I do not have weird noise nor abnormal shift feel / grind.

The wear pattern on the face of the teeth looks normal. Put it back together and go drive it!

not normal. too much tq or poor oil quality or both.
or possibly too many dyno runs in third gear without sufficient cool down.
use good oil and keep within tq potential and gear faces come out looking like chrome plating.

Thanks for your comments.

Local transmission shop recommended to increase the oil viscosity too.

94AWDcoupe, which oil do you recommend? Thanks!

I also did the amsoil for a long time but finally decided to go with the cocktail and haven't looked back since.

No. Mine was pretty worn and even had chipping on a couple. Yours looks pretty good in comparison. As long as it drives fine. You should be good.

Mine was actually starting to get grabby and I would have to throttle it to get the gear to realease or slow down .

Ah, I see. Thanks for comments.

I don't expect tranny to last forever, but I heard 5 speed is pretty tough compared to 6 speed, so I was a bit surprised to see the wear marks.

If you have some pics of your tranny gear, please share some.

Main gear wear looks better than mine.

I guess shifting problem is more from the synchronizers?

Did you use Redline cocktail 1:1 ratio?
