I've got a EFR 7163 and have recently had an engine failure. The turbo appears to be ok, but i've had an exhaust value snap and found it stuck at the start of one of the runners.





The value had a chunk missing and there was quite a bit of metal filings found in the volute of the turbo. I'm not sure if the chunk came off in one piece or the metal filings I found was that piece.

I'm wondering what types of checks I should be getting done on the turbo to make sure it's ok to put onto a new engine. I've been told that apart from a visual check the turbos can't have any maintenance done on them. Best I could get was put it on a flow bench to check that the blades don't hit the housing and oil is able to flow through it ok.

Also whats the best way to clean the metal filings out of the turbo?

 

take off the exhaust and intake turbo housing and check if the impeller blades are ok.. then you can easily clean the housings too..

 

Is that all that's required. Should I back purge the oil lines to ensure there are no metal filings been picked up by the oil pump and been lodged in the turbo.

Are there any other checks I should be doing to make sure it won't cause an issue on the new motor?
