Question?? Timing jumped this morning. Got gas, started driving and car backfired and died.. Took the upper cover off and the exh cam tooth mark was straight up, the int cam mark was about 3 to 4 teeth towards fire wall.. what would cause this just on light acceleration??

happened to me when my tensioner blew its guts out. You should take off the lower cover and inspect. Also you probably bent valves so prepare your bank account.

 

Bad tensioner.
Or a belt that was left loose.
Or a loose tensioner pulley.

Happened to a buddy of mine. No bent valves.

 

thats pretty lucky, probably depends alot on which way it goes, advanced or retarded. I think i jumped 2 teeth and all my intake valves bent.

 

Got a chance to take it apart.. the balance shaft belt broke

 

damn that sucks, but its pretty typical for these engines.

 

Time for a compression test.

 

Next question.. replaced all the belts and tensioners. Set the timing took like 3 times. Started the car and now I'm getting some weird *** noise down by the crank area. Sounds like something is rubbing.. tore every thing back down a second time and same noise.. car idles and revs fine, no misses or backfires..

Good golly. Doesnt sound safe.
You need to pinpoint the area.
If it didnt do it before belt job id say its something you did wrong
Possibly installed the crankshaft position reluctor wheel upside down? But i think it would start.
Find exact area of noise then tear it apart.

 

When you said you pulled it apart and inspected did you just remove the covers or did you pull the head as well?

 

best make sure you don't have bent valves, if you do and one of them drops its gonna toast your whole motor.

 

I think if he had a valve problem the exhaust at the rear bumper couldn't sound that smooth, intake or exhaust. I like to stick my hand in the exhaust stream and feel for any misses. On the other hand it is hard to believe he could be that lucky.

 

I didn't pull the head. I will be doing a comp test when I get off. But the belt broke as I was pulling away from the pump, so I was barely going 2-3 mph...
