Coil or cam position sensor?

Have had an intermittent miss, started as a stumble on acceleration and then moved to be persistent miss. Tracked it back to #1 coil-- plug was black all others in good condition. Tested spark on all coils 2 and 4 had a good hot spark, 1 and 3 had spark but seemed to be not as hot. Anyway changed the coil on number 1 fired it up. Seemed to run smooth--took it out and under any load the miss was worse than before--almost like 2 cylinder are out. Have a coil on plug sparktech set up on Evo VIII. Have read that Cam position sensor cam cause this? Anyone have a definitive solution-- I dont like to change parts for the sake of it.. ( already changed plugs running .022gap)
