It made a huge difference. Remember, I am that guy that if its just 1 decibel louder than stock then its too loud. Those that run dual mufflers probably dont have both a 6” with a 7” diameter round muffler. They probably run smaller diameter mufflers or worse resonators. Also it depends on the muffler used as well. Some racing style mufflers dont have any fiber glass packing inside, but rather just some steel wool to keep weight down i guess. I’m not saying Magnaflow is the quietest, but its the brand I had.

My current exhaust setup is dual muffler and it is loud. I have the Buschur SD rear muffler and a magnaflow 4” center. I’m doing something different right now. I put a manual cutout but have it installed inline with the exhaust and not as a “cutout”. The cutout inner diameter wall is 3” but the round “throttle” plate is 2.5” diameter. When its closed, the exhaust will pass around the 1/4” gap around the circumference gap of the plate and cutout wall. Most of the sound waves should hit the plate and cancel out to bring down the noise significantly. Then I can open it for WOT pulls for maximum flow and close it back up for normal driving. I havent finished yet to start it up and see how quiet it gets but pretty soon ill be done. I calculated the annulus (area between two circles, 3” and 2.5") to be equal to the area of a 1” exhaust pipe. Which in my opinion is good enough flow for normal driving. Plus I can control the plate in cabin to be as open or closed as I want.

From the tone and quietness, I believe this is just the catback mated with stock catalytic and stock downpipe . With a test pipe it gets louder and deeper. But the problem with video and sound clips its hard to truly tell how loud or quiet something is unless they reference some other sound we are familiar with the loudness in the same video. Example have a stock evo rev next to a modified exhaust evo.

Also keep in mind, certain mods will change the sound or volume/dynamic . Such as Cams , exhaust manifold etc..

Tanabe Medallion

Another clip but I dont know if its just catback or other exhaust mods as well.

Idk what diameter they had but i remember they did used magnaflow muffler too and it just looks odd for me honestly lol looks like some backyard rigged exhaust system.

Hmm sounds like a interesting set up, but wouldn't it be 1/2" gap instead of 1/4? cause that does make a lot of difference since more air could pass through around the plate. i would like to see this set up when you're done.

^You won't be able to make your exhaust as quiet as your probably want . The dual muffler setup i had is your best option if you want to keep it true 3" and straight flow through . But I did not have cams when I ran it on my setup .

Only way to make it stock quiet is to introduce a major restriction that can open up for flow and noise and close back down for no noise .

Trust me , I tried many different exhaust setups and even made my own modified echausts. My goal was to be close to stock quiet, 3" and catless. Stock quiet you need restriction, very quiet but not exactly stock you need big multiple mufflers with good packing .

Seems to me thats the only choice i have left. ill keep the Tanabe in mind until i hear one in person and compare it to mine. Your goal is the same as mine right now also lol so ill be waiting for your new exhaust setup and see how it goes if i like it i might just copy it since i already know a couple fabricators that could hook me up.

The Tanabe is opposite of what you asked for. You didnt want to hurt performance and quiet down at the same time. The Tanabe is quiet only as a catback with a stock piping a head and tapers inside. So depending on what power level you are, the Tanabe's taper in the muffler can hurt flow/power.

I’ll probably make a video when im done in the near future.

I'm looking the same thing for my car - but using a 5" front muffler (for clearance) and a 6" rear muffler. If it's not very quiet, then i'll use their large oval muffler in the rear and chop out the spare wheel well.
When I say "quiet" I just mean you can drive the thing long distance without needing earmuffs

On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being oem quiet , I would say it was a high 7 or slightly higher. It was relatively quiet when doing WOT, so you won't attract attention.

I can't say for certain how quiet or loud you will be running smaller diameter mufflers than I did. You can fit s 6" muffler where the cat was. But I had the heat shield removed when I installed the 6" center muffler . I'm not 100% sure how well it will fit with the shield on .

Something about the oval muffler that was brought to my attention is that, even though you gain packing material value in the width, you lose material in the height. I ran a vibrant oval muffler (center inlet/outlet) with buschur bullet center and that was not as quiet as I want. Some one in a different thread recommended to use offset inlet/outlet wide body muffler because the offset angle of travel inside the muffler might help direct the sound wave to collide with the perforated tube and suppress more sound. But I have not tested that. I think it was user Aby@milspec.

I swapped out from something I dont recall to the tanabe touring and been super happy with it. Its way quieter than what I had and I still make ~500whp.

I dont have a video outside of the car, but this is the go pro from the side window a few weeks ago. It really is substantially quieter than it use to be with much less drone noticed the few times it has seen highway (just to/from the track when not towed)

There is a Tanabe Medallion in mint condition here on Evom at the moment. I had it on my first Evo and loved how quiet it was. I currently have a Buschur DP, hi flow cat and their magnaflow exhaust(like pictured above) and it is still too loud for my tastes. I ended up buying a Fujitsubo which is also just as quiet. I plan to keep running a high flow cat for the immediate future. If it wasn't for the fact that I did not find the Fuji I would of totally picked this up.
