Magnesium wheels never went away. When auto manufacturers wanted to copy the look of magnesium wheels they went with cheaper aluminum. The main problem with magnesium wheels from the 60's is corrosion. That has mostly been solved. For racing, forged magnesium wheels are still very popular and are occasionally sold as OEM. Magnesium alloy is about a third lighter than aluminum alloy.
