Welding a bung for wideband
Welding a bung for wideband
I'm looking into tuning my Evo 8 soon, I got a Tomei downpipe v2 and my AEM wideband. Just need advice on where to weld the bung on the downpipe. Is there a correct way to do it? After reading a few posts here I can determine its toward the back of the downpipe at the 2 or 10 o'clock position, but u seen some that are at the 12 o clock. I just want to be certain before I get it done, thanks!
Im pretty sure your downpipe already has a bung welded onto it so you should be good to go. If it doesnt I would not recommend putting it at 12 as it will most likely hit the body of the car. I'd recommend facing passenger side at around the 2-3 o'clock position. Just dont have it facing downward as condensation can collect around the sensor there as well as the fact that it will be hanging down which isn't ideal. I shoot for parallel or just past facing upwards some which I believe is the recommended location.

So I've had a few different downpipe setups over the years and my favorite is where I use the bung in the downpipe for the wideband then use a spot in the catback section for the rear o2 sensor. Alternatively I've also used a bung in my test pipe for my wideband but Id prefer to have it closer and keeps the wire tucked up and when on the end of the downpipe Im better able to achieve that.
before the cat.
at the end of the downpipe (as far away from the turbo as you can get).
about 2 oclock on the passenger side should work as long as you pick the correct spot.

Best spot in my opinion is at the 12 o clock position. Because above toward the passenger side there is a whole with a rubber grommet you can pass the wiring through cleanly . I had it there in the past with out any fitment issues. You just have to be smart and be sure not to install it too near or angled toward the underbody well to account for slight exhaust movement from the motor or hard cornering.
The three o clock position is ok as well but I found it to sometimes be a little too close to the underbody or the flange itself for easy removal/install. Now what I hate and don’t understand why they do this is when they install the bung at under the oil pan location. I know the closer the sensor is to the manifold the better it is for “reaction” but that location completely sucks for running the wiring!
