stumped.... help me out lifters?
stumped.... help me out lifters?
OK..... im knocking a little rust off and working on an evo again. (been a couple years)
CAR: 2004 evo 8
SYMPTOMS: a buddies car came to me with a tick sounded like the typical lifter tick.
-Very audible ticking sound at idle.
-kelford 272's (high lift version arrived by surprise) were installed by the tuning shop he went to, they advised him to do springs and retainers so he agreed and they installed a set of gsc's
- After about a couple weeks and a couple hundred miles i got the call the noise started and was asked to take a look after he became stumped.
WHAT I KNOW:
-the noise began after driving and a mis-shift to fourth gear happened... ( while giving it the beans) just a mis-shift not a 3-4-3
-performed on his own, were a set of gsc no tick lifters, he went with the cams in place installation (noise remained after install)
-performed a leak down test and got bad numbers on cylinder 4 and thats when he threw in the towel after believing he bent a valve.
WHERE IM AT NOW: After receiving the car i went through the process of diag and heres what i came up with..
-checked timing and every thing was still timed correctly leading me to believe no piston to valve collision occurred.
- scoped cylinders to confirm no visible damage was present
- leak down tested the car myself getting about 25% across the board cylinder 1-4 (friend must have not had cylinder 4 on compression stroke during his test)
-pulled cams from car and visually inspected everything, upon my inspection the only thing i found to be out of place was on cylinder 2's exhaust side, the lifters appeared to be the stock lifters (friend forgot or got side tracked and must have skipped them) i called and he had the two remaining gsc lifters in his possession
- removed the two factory lifters and replaced (removed all other lifters bled/cleaned in diesel and installed)
-buttoned the car back up started and noise remained
-thinking i could be a possible rod bearing failure i drained the oil and carefully inspected, some metallic look was in the oil (believe from new cam and lifter install breaking in) but no chunks of bearing material were present and metallic drain plug was good as well.
MY QUESTION I NEED HELP WITH:
After all that... still being stumped and not willing to give up i pulled the valve cover again, began turning the motor over and watched all the moving parts, cylinder 1 and 4 on the intake side had lifters that do not depress and fill at the same rate as its corresponding intake valve, i rotated the motor over until the pressure was off the lifters and i could depress the lifter heads with my fingers but on both cylinder 1 and 4 only one of the two intake valves lifters could be depressed.
Do you guys believe i could have 2 collapsed lifters? or from rotating the engine a few times did they just bleed down? PLEASE HELP!
