There is nothing normal about a noise that comes after you do some sort of work on an engine like that. I am just going by the last head that was brought to me, and it had a loud lifter noise, which was tracked down to huge oil clearance between the cam and its housing, so most of the volume was being dumped out around the cam journal and not reaching the lifters, so they were basically running in a semi-collapsed condition, leading to that noise. Not saying that that is what everyones problem is, but it sure is strange that after many of you have cams installed, you are getting these valvetrain noises. After I repaired the cam clearances in *****'s head, the engine was quiet, and the oil pressure was steady and solid. So you may want to check the cam clearances in the head.

FYI, they do nto come that great from the factory to begin with, so if you do not install them properly, it can only get worse. So if you are up in arms, then the only real way to find out if you have tried all other avenues is to pull the cams out, bolt the caps down, and measure what kind of clearance you have between the cam journal and the cam bearing.

Great information. I started to hear some ticking sound from the engine and thought it was normal but I guess not. I know the ticking sound is normal on honda engine though. Sounds to me like the spec on the cams could off for the EVO then because the problem seems to be on different cars installed by different people.

I believe Darkhorse is correct. Mine seems to be only one lifter on the passenger side. So what is it, that aftermarket cams have, that could cause this issue?

all 16 lifters are pretty much on the passanger side.. the whole motor sits on that side.. I think some cam installs are just going together without tolerance checks like darkhorse and others have found.

So is the ticking normal and are we the only one with cams that are hearing/seeing this issue?? If this is indeed an issue I like to check it out now before it gets worst.

Thanks

It sounds like the ticking is a result of improper installation..?

Dont rule out the fuel injectors . Big injectors like the ones on the evo can be loud especially at idle. Take a long screwdriver and touch the tip to an injector and put your ear against the handle. Poke around with other parts to, like the valvecover, to see if you can pinpoint the area.

Wow, old thread brought back from the dead. Although, I am getting cams installed in two weeks at Turbotrix. I am hoping I do not have lifter ticking... in the event that I do have ticking after the installation, where/what can be done about the noise? Will I have to have Darkhorse re-spec my cam housing?
