Question Anyone else have this problem?

I had my cams installed about a month ago...

HKS 264i and 272e. In the last few days I have driven the car...I have heard knocking/ticking coming from the eingine. I popped the hood and listened....it's coming from the valve cover...most notably from the back side (side with fuel rail)...can't tell if it is coming from the front (side with exhaust manifold and turbo).

Does anyone else with this same setup have this problem or a similiar setup have it? Is it just because the cams are higher lift and they are coming down hard on the valves? Seems when I bring the RPM's up a little...it goes away....but I can't be totally certain.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

it sounds like the cams retainers (i am pretty sure thats how it is called) are bend. do a search for the post that darkhorse posted about the head work he did for Willie's car. it sounded very similar to that.

good luck

So what are we to do about this problem.....is it something that I should be worried about or something that will just slightly annoy me since I only hear it at idle every once in a while and only for a few seconds? They never really got to a point in that thread. Thanks for any advice

I also was told it was normal. The sound goes away after the car warms up, at least I don't hear it when I have driven a bit. Right when you crank the car it is real loud! Like a valve problem or something. But again, I was assured it was normal. Anyone else want to assure me further?

I also experience another odd sound after I got my HKS272's. When ever I change gears I hear a "whinning" sound. Almost like the BOV but it isn't the BOV. I was also told this was normal. Again, someone assure me on this one too, please.

Gotta add one more thing. After the HKS272's my dipstick kept backing out to the point where one time it backed off completely and oil was everywhere. I was told the increase in preasure in the crank case caused the proble, to that ecxtent I believe.

Yeah, increased blowby can increase the crankcase pressure and push the dipstick out, did you make timing adjustments with adjustable timing gears to decrease the cams overlap? make sure the breather itself isn't blocked or plugged, you'd be amazed to see what/where things will leak from if it builds up too much pressure..

Not sure what else your describing.. a few rattles and noises seems to be pretty normal on my car, but its entirely subjective, I can't honestly answer that.

I have 264/272's like you and I don't hear any abnormal valvetrain noise while driving. What I do hear is a tapping noise at idle when the car is almost warmed up. I don't hear it when I first start the car cold, I have to let it warm a bit then hear it and after it's fully warmed up the noise is barely noticable. I asked one of the guys (Jeff?) at Turbotrix to listen to my motor when it was warm and he said it sounds fine so I'm not worried.

Do you hear the noise while driving or just at idle and does it settle down when the car is fully warm?

Seems just at idle but I don't know how much and when. I have to look into it closer and keep track of when it happens

Dont meen to spam the thread, but while I have all you guys here that have cams, do you ever notice how slow your RPM's climb at the top of fourth right at about 6500?? My RPMS go up real steady and fast until it hits 6500 then it just starts to creep up very slowly

OK...a little further info here...

Yesterday I noticed right when I started the car to pull it out to wash it and let it run for 2 minutes...no ticking!

Washed the and let it run for another minute before taking it around the block. Ticking started...very presnet!

Went around the block and parked in my driveway after getting on it up and down the 2 streets. VERY slight ticking.

This morning...started it up and let it run for 2 minutes before leaving for work (21 miles away highway driving)...TICKING.

Got to work....ran the car a little hard pushing it a bit...but not beating on it....parked at the store...no ticking (didn't pop the hood this time...rest of them I did).

Any ideas?

My ticking seems to be very random. When first got the cams I had no noise at all. Now they just recently started ticking. I think it is a oiling problem getting to the hydraulic lifters or some dirt has clogged some off the opening. If get on the gas for long periods of time the ticking will go away.

Seems like the same here. I had no ticking at all when they were installed....now I do. I only drive it when it's nice out now...don't use it to go to work usually unless it's Saturday. So I don't get many chances to check out what it's doing
