Timing 64 block 63 head(mivec) with AEM Tru Time exhaust gear.
Hey guys, I've searched, read a lot of end all threads etc but I get confused after reading a whole thread. Even Blue91x's thread seems more sporadic than just a guide or answer. I'm on a build that's been going on 2 years dont want to f this up.
Mivec and exhaust cam gear both get timing like this picture lifted from the ams guide, counter clock wise one half tooth while the crank timing mark is lined correctly. I feel pretty confident with that but want to seek reassurance. (63 belt fwiw)
I've certainly got a little confused about how to bring the exhaust cam and reluctor back to "0" or even the need to performance wise and timing wise using the tru time gear. Self tuning, I really want to make sure the timing in the ECU is correct (vipec)
Basically, just make the inner part of the cam gear line up with the timing mark.
@letsgetthisdone basically line up in a straight line 3 points. The timing cover, the zero mark, and the center of the cam gear bolt? That makes sense 😜.
The mivec gear is cut and will be the 1/2 tooth retarded like normal on a 63 -belt Sound right ?

You have two timing marks on the adjustable gear, the zero mark on the outer part that engages the belt, and the Zero (and +/- marks) on the inner portion. Line the Zero mark in the inner portion up with the valve cover.
My motor has the ER oil pump gear, but the principal of how t time the gear is the same. Not concerned about the outer mark, just the inner, since the inner represents the position of the cam. See the pic...
I think what letsgetthisdone is saying is that you are close but not perfect. In the last picture you posted, the cam gear is not perfect. You need to put it somewhere around R2° to get 0° on the center of the cam gear to line up at the notch on the valve cover. Right now A2 looks like its pointing toward the notch on the cover. It will run fine as is but to be perfect, you will need to adjust it. Look at the picture he posted and you can see what I mean.
OP, when you said the MIVEC gear was cut, was that the ER mod for extra range of MIVEC timing? Good post for reassurance. That AEM TrueTime gear feels and looks like quality.
