Octane: How much is too much for the 4g63
I was surfing the VP racing fuel website and found a couple of points of interest: First, they recommend their fuels partly based on compression ratios for turboed and naturally aspirated motors, and often, our Evos fall in the lower grade (and more affordable) fuels based on our relatively low compression ratio. Second, they have a new fuel they claim is better than C16. It is called VP Import. According to VP:
Maximum power and torque in small displacement, high
RPM, all motor, turbocharged or nitrous sport compact
applications. Makes 5% more power than C16 and similar
nonoxygenated fuels. Works well under high temperatures due to mechanical heat.
COLOR Clear
MOTOR OCTANE 120+
SPECIFIC GRAVITY .744 at 60°F
I'm simply wondering this: Can custom tuners (Vishnu, Turbotrix, Buschur, RRE, etc, etc.) really take advantage of this extremely high performance fuel with the stock turbo'd, stock block 4g63? Or do they just appreciate the margin of safety such fuel provides? If it is just margin of safety, I'd sure rather get the much cheaper C12. Please, don't bother to explain the problems with the catalytic converter and oxygen sensors when running leaded. We all know that stuff already. What is ideal for drag racing and track days?

First off: VP import is around 900-1000 dollars for a 55 Gallon drum & it's banned in most classes. So, your probably not going to find it at your local track. And why would you buy expensive race fuel for your stock block/stock turbo car? You can get 112 for $5.50 a gallon, and 116 for a little more.
In our experience ...C16 is the best gas for tuning the 4G63. Yes import gas is good ..but at 16 dollars / gallon .. and not seeing any crazy gains over C16 , We stick to what works .. + unless you get a drum of the stuff, and keep it at home. You wont find many shops who carry the import gas. Hope this helps ...

Thanks Mark,
I ask because I am going north to Vishnu and I need to bring a pale of good gas. Everyone was out of C16 so I called VP. They hooked me up with a supplier who had it in stock and my problem was solved. While looking around on the web, I saw the IMPORT. I had no idea that the VP Import was so expensive. I'm using race fuel for amatuer drag racing, so I'm not too concerned with rules and regs, but certainly have no desire to pay that kind of $ for a little fun on a Saturday afternoon.
One more thing, you say our Evos can actually take advantage of the C16 with the stock block and turbo? Great!
