Well its certainly going to run stronger than an evo that is tapering the boost, provided timing isn't being taken away from knock detection, that is. And if its keeping up with modded evo's I'd say its running full timing on that amount of boost, another reason its strong running. A stock evo keeping up with modified evo's would qualify as strong running in my book.

yeah but it's not really quite stock if it doesn't taper the boost like a stock car does, you get what i'm saying? i mean even if it is stock, it is the same as having a boost controller in that it holds 19 psi all the way to redline. I'm not really trying to argue with you, but you probably thought my last statement was kind of stupid so I am just explaining what I meant. It's just that it is essentially a moddified evo if it runs more boost up top.

I have the same Autometer CF guage in my EVO. My EVO, stock, would taper off boost @ around 5000rpm to 14-15psi. I replaced the BOV with a 1G DSM BOV and now it holds 19psi to redline. I can really feel the difference between the two, it is like night and day. I also DO NOT have a Boost Controller.

Maybe I have a freak EVO too and my stock BOV was just a boost leaking piece of crap.

man that's crazy! haha, that's cool though... so all you did was change the BOV?? And I bet you have 0 problems with that bov too, since it's recirculating and it's a factory piece. Man, that's what I should do also.

This no-taper-stock-Evo is like a phenomenon kinda like seeing a UFO or something. Once in a while someone will post about it and no one can explain it. I actually met someone w/ such an Evo and it was stock too so I know it happens just don't know how.

Sorry for the newbie question, but what exactly causes our boost to taper? Is it the ECU sending a signal to the boost solenoid at 5000 rpm to open the wastegate more?

He mentioned that his car has a cone filter. Has anyone checked their boost before and after an open filter install?

All,

I have seen his car and ridden in it and the boost does not taper. When my Evo was stock I could definately notice and feel the taper without even looking at the boost gauge. In his car you can feel the pull all the way to redline and the boost gauge backs up what you are feeling. So, I can verify that his boost holds around 20psi.

irs not unusual, when my evo was stock, it held steady at 19 all the way to redline as well.

OK I didn't mean to start a war. I just thought it was odd and wanted to find out what everyone was thinking. I did buy the car brand new. As for my gauge...it holds steady at 20psi. As some of you have stated even if the gauge was off I should still see some taper. About the only thing I think my have made a bit of difference is that I tightened the hell out of all of the intake clamps. The ones on the BOV were quite loose in my opinion. Maybe this is all linked to the stock BOV leaking a bit. Who knows.

and.....I do not have an aftermarket boost controller installed. I was going to put one in but because it is holding I suppose there really isn't a need to do so.

Aplaudd, I have no boost gauge but believe you are holding boost well because of the tightening the clamps. If you read my post of "free hp by tightening 1 clamp" this is exactly what I was talking about. My car pulls so much better on high rpm's since tightening the bov clamps. I sincerely think this is a problem on many stock evos, and many that ran stronger somehow did not have a leak from the factory. I use to have a highly modified eclipse turbo (1990) and I know what it feels like to get more hp, and the clamp tightening in my case as well as many others who have posted on my thread has been a big help. Clamp on guys!!Btw, the only ones appearing to be really loose are the ones off the stock bov; although others are loose just a little, these can be snugged up quite a bit. Just my 2 cents and congrats on a strong running car.
Stay safe,
Punisher

I'll be installing a boost gauge on my bone stock EVO either this weekend or the next. I'll note how boost behaves before and after some hose clamp tightening.
