I'm pretty sure my transfer case is starting to whine on my 05 MR. It's very quiet in the lower gears but in 5th and 6th with the windows up I can hear it clearly. How long should I be able to drive it like this? Does it affect performance? It's not too loud at all but I can definitely hear it.

 

Are you sure it's the transfer case? I have 05 MR too and the whine appears around 60 mph and it's the rear diff making the whine. I would take the car on a lift and let a mechanic listen to the parts while you drive the car.

 

Well I found out I had a very minor leak on one of the seals on the t case. The seal had very little fluid on it. So I'm guessing it's the t case. The fluid was changed within the last 2 months.

 

did you check the fluid level on the transfer case?

 

Pump it from below until it comes out the top, then drive it, then pump it again
