New Evo owner, misfiring. Please help!

Hello, bought a 2003 Evo 8 and car began misfiring. Was planning to change the spark plugs, but noticed something different from a few how-to videos and a spark plug replacement guide I found on this site. The videos I saw have the ignition coils individually screwed to the valve cover, but in my car, there is a plate that holds it all together? And each coil is held onto the plate by a screw and a nut at the bottom. And the plate was screwed onto the valve cover with a bolt that didn't seem to fit completely, and I was able to move the whole plate a little bit with just my hands. I'm assuming this may be causing the misfiring issue? Any thoughts, advice, comments would be appreciated.

Video you saw was probably OEM coils. On you car these are an aftermarket COP kit. A standard upgrade.
As stated above, the plate holds them and you can just pull and they will come out together.

Hey Noah,

This looks like one of our older ignition systems. (I can tell from the older style logo on the two center coils). It looks like the two outer coils have also been replaced. Our lifetime warranty doesn't transfer between buyers, but if you're having issues with the cop kit, please feel free to reach out to us for help with troubleshooting. Ignition systems are very simple and if it is the issue, there's only a certain amount of things that could cause it to not work correctly. I'll be glad to assist you with the issue. You can give us a call at 423-0665-9616 or shoot us an email at support@jdcustomsusa.com. Welcome to the Evo community!

I don't believe the outside coils are fake. They usually come in from Denso with that sticker on it and there should be another smaller sticker under that one also. We remove those stickers to replace them with ours when you order a cop kit. The problem might not be related to the cop at all. That's usually the first thing that gets fingers pointed at it when there's an issue. I suggest checking for vacuum leaks and do a boost leak test if possible.

You should scan for codes first before you tore it all apart. That way if you had say a P0303 for cyl miss on cyl 3 you could have swapped coil 3 to cyl 4 and if the miss followed to cyl 4 then you would know it’s a bad coil.
